LIMIT OF ITS MACHINERY But This is Only 60 Per Cont of the Mine’s Producing Oapacity—Saving Time on New Hoist House—The Oolumbia-Kootensy Shaft Making for the 1000-Foot Level. The Le k ‘ mine is now working to the full capacity of its machinery, but this is only 60 per cent. of the producing capacity of the mine. During the last 14 days of April the total shipments were 6,700 tons, an average of 479 tons a day and this output is being maintained, with 362 men on the pay rdil. The engine room for the new main hoist is being rushed ahead on a plan of working which will save fully- a month in the time of construction, A stone retaining wall is being built on three faces of the hill for a founda- tion, which will be 15 feet high on the southeast, 20 feet on the south- west and 8 feet on the northwest corner. In orderto expedite the work, the erection of the engine house itself has been started on wooden trusses and will be carried on simul ly with the t of the wall, so that by the time the foundation is up to it, the structure will be near completion. The shaft which is being sunk from the surface to connect with the Surprise from the Black Bear tunnel is down about Go feet and, as up- ‘rising proceeds at the same time, connection will be made in about three weeks. The shaft will then be enlarged and timbered to it full size. Work on the. battery of boilers furnished by Fraser & Chalmers has been completed, but nothing can be done on those bought from the Jenckes Machine company until the missing parts are received. The new Nickel Plate hoist is now ready for the rope and the head fram is being painted. Sink- ing on tne shaft is being prosecuted vigorously. in ore bin will be built as soon as thé Red Mountain Rajlway company locates the spur. A station has been cut on the 200-fo0i level of . the inside shaft below the Ivo. 6 tunnel of the Co- lumbia-Kootenay and sinking has been resumed. When this shaft reaches the 4oo-foot level, which will be sooo feet vertically under the outcrop, the vein will be ex- plored and ore blocked out on both the 200 and 400-foot levels. Drift- ing on the vein and crosscutting is also proceeding from the No. 6 tuh- nel level, The work of extending the levels and blocking out ore by means of raises ard winzes proceeds as usual in the Josie and No.1 mines. The force will be increased as soon as the company can secure air to oper- ate more drills, The tramway io the railroad is finished and the ore bins at the railroad are being framed. - To Meet the Underwriters.
