Mirabile’s study has found,
for example, that disease
severity climbs not only
when the moon is full but also
at the time of the new moon,
when the lunar image dis-
appears. This effect is more
apparent in the spring and
winter, Mirabile said.

The seasonal and lunar
variations were most obvious
in psychotic patients, but
were also evident in patients
with other mental disorders,
he said. Psychosis is defined
as a mental disorder marked
by deranged personality and
loss of contact with reality.
