st is not often that I
indulge in poetry in preparing
thig column. I've learned
through the years that it's
something to which many peo-
ple do not respond. i

‘Maybe poetry, like olives
and oysters, is something that
you-have to cultivate a taste
for. As for me, I'm still working
on the oysters bit, but olives
and good poetry I can take any
time.

So, like it or not, this
column gets underway with a
poem. It’s called, simply, “New
Leaf - New Year.” No name is
assigned to it, so far as 1 know.

He came to my desk with
quivering lip,

The lesson was done.

“Have you a new leaf for
me, dear Teacher?

T have spoiled this one!”

T took his leaf, all soiled
and blotted,

And gave him a new one,
all unspotted;

Then into his tired heart I
smiled:

“Do better now, my Child!"

I went to the throne, with
trembling heart,

The year was done.

“Have you a new one for
me, dear Master?

T have spoiled this one!”

He took my year, all soiled
and blotted,

And gave mea new one, all
unspotted;*

Then into my tired heart
he smiled:

“Do better now, my Child!"

What a wonderful gift we
have in every new day God
entrusts to us, How much more

wonderful when He gives us a”

whole bundle’ of 365 ‘days,*

I know, of course, that in
actual fact, what we call a new
year is simply an arbitrary
measure of time. But the re-
curring cycle of seasons sug-
gests that such a measurement
is proper. It is certainly con-
venient, and I personally find it
very reassuring.

The festive season is now
past. We face again the serious
matters of life. You may or may
not believe in New Year's
resolutions. I don't intend to
argue the point here, except to
say that when they take the

form of sincere goals for the
year ahead, they can be of real
value.

Probably the best resolu-
tion any of us could make would
be to set as a rule of our lives
for 1978 that we will take a few
minutes every day to read the
Word of God. That resolution,
followed consistently and with
honest intent, would do more to
change our lives and to trans-
form our whole society than
anything else I know.

perienced. But the stresses and
strains and pressures that

an exhibitionist. Everything

criticizes the act. All too often,
a. critic interrupts a rare
moment of relaxation. The
journalist's tension returns and

It seems that a journalism
professor at the University of
Texas conducted a study on
whether viewers pick up cues
about bias or fairness from how
a newscaster delivers the news
as well as what he actually
says. Does he raise an cyebrow
after reading an item? Does he
smile, indicating perhaps a lack
of sincerity?

JAMES TANKARD AND
some graduate students made
up a newscast and had one
story testing viewer reaction to
“a raised eyebrow cue, one

story with a smile cue and two °

stories with no. cue.” The
stories were based on actual
events. The tests were run at
the University of Texas at
Austin and at Southwest Texas
State University.

_ The eyebrow cue: “pro-
duced significent differences in
ratings" with viewers thinking
the announcer unfair, unethical,
unbelievable, dishonest, insin-
cere and biased, Tankard and
the students report in the

current Journal of Communi-

cation. The smile cue, in
contrast, didn’t have any signi-
ficant effect on any of the six
categories.

“OUR STUDY PROVIDES
evidence that raised eyebrows
are interpreted as a sign of bias
when compared to the lack of
such a cue,” he added. “The
failure of viewers to see the
smile as biasing might have
been an artifact of our par-
ticular story selections for the
two stories that were used with

- the smile cue were somewhat

humorous, and the smile might
have been seen as an appro-
priate response by a news-
caster.”

THE RESEARCH RE-
port, written in the serious
prose appropirate toa scholarly
journal, made no mention
whether the announcer in ques-
tion also smoked a big cigar and

‘We've heard about the emotional and social
costs of auto accidents. And at the Insurance
Corporation, our knowledge is first-hand. We
talk to the survivors.

Still, many people don’t buckle up. So maybe it
will help to look at the “practical” costs. The

‘dollars-and-cents facts about accidents and

seat belts,

Fact: Injuries and deaths will cost B.C.
motorists just under $100 million in 1977. This
includes hospital and medical costs, lost wages,
and injury and death benefit settlements.

Fact: Nothing costs more or pushes insurance
rates higher than injury and fatality claims. And,
alarmingly, the cost of these claims keeps

going up. The cost of our average bodily injury

claim rose from $3,736 for the eight months

ending October, 1976 to $6,358 for the same

period in 1977—an increase of 70 per cent.

months of 1976, compulsory use of seat belts
together with lower speed limits reduced
injuries by 22 per cent and saved $1-million

bodily injury in an auto accident is reduced by

50 per cent.

Remember that next time you drive. Anywhere.
