P| A)S/E A|T se sesee pe wRORHOC ME MCOMA Pulpit and Pew By Pastor DONALD W. REED Someone said to me one day, “You seem to have such confidence in your Bible. But what if the Bible is not true? Yes, I place a great deal of confidence in my Bible, because for me that Bible is the Word of God. After all, from its first page to its last, that's exactly what it claims to be. The Bible is its own best witness. And if we can't believe its testimony and refuse to prove its inherent power, then no amount of argu- ment will help. If you have doubts about its divine origin, its absolute truth, its native authority, then my; advice to you is simply to keep on reading it. Sooner or later its truth will break through. Yes, for this preacher, the to man’s search for knowledge other than the Babel of human voices? Must man helplessly fumble on in the feeble hope that someday, somewhere he may find the answers? Is there no voice from out there that speaks? The answer is a dismal “No” if the Bible is not true. If the Bible is not true, there is no truth to satisfy man’s ignorance. It is more than a voice that man needs. He must have a voice that speaks with authority. Man wants Truth—the truth about God, about man, about sin, about death, about heaven, about hell, about life, about himself. He knows that there are vast areas of knowledge beyond His grasp and that happiness depends upon an authoritative lati i those Bible is the most book ever written, But what about the ques- tion my friend asked me? What if the Bible isn't true? Then there is no voice to answer man’s questions. Ques- tions like: Why am I here? Where am I going? Is there life after death? What is God like? Can man know God? How can I find happiness? Is there no voice to speak matters. Where shall he look? The answer is not in man. There must be a source outside of man. But if the Bible is not true, no such source exists. Something else. If the Bible is not true, there is no law to discipline man's conduct. Despite the moral anarchy of our times, any sane person recognizes the need for moral direction. But what is right? The question haunts him day and night. Is there no standard, no yard-stick, no critereon? Is there no voice that says, “Do this and you shall live?” There is nothing left for man but to plunge headlong into the paths of the prodigal, for none of us has the strength or the will to forever resist the awful drive of sin—unless there be some absolute standard that not only defines good and evil, but rewards the good and punishes the evil. What is more, if the Bible is not true, there is no Christ to claim man’s affections. The only: Jesus we know is the Jesus of the Bible. Take away the Bible and there is no Christ, no atonement, no salvation, no power against sin, no divine friend, no voice from beyond the grave, no mediator, no Holy Spirit, no missions, no Gospel. Without the Bible, we would have as many Christs as we have human imaginations. | Without the Bible, there is none tosay, “Iam the Way, the Truth, the Life." Ah, thank God the Bibte is true. Thank God that the Bible is the Word of God! - church directory GRACE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 7th Ave., South, Castlegar Summer Worship Service 9a.m. A.warm welcome to all. ST. Castlegar News headline stories one year ago According to a research conducted by the Castlegar Bust, eg pou (From an editorial in the Toronto Star.) IS CANADA ON THE way to becoming a police state? few years ago that question would have struck most Canadians as absurd, A police state was associated with military dictatorships in Africa and Latin America. According to Needham: Exile is the Answer By RICHARD J. NEEDHAM (From columns in the Tor- onto Globe and Mail.) The British Columbia gov- ernment kas come up with the notion that heroin users should be forced to take treatment or else go to jail for a year. That's silly. What they should do is to select a remote island off the B.C. coast and announce that free heroin (or any other drug) will be given to anyone who's willing to live there. The same island (or others like it) might be used as a dumping ground for alcoholics (free booze), welfare parasites (everything laid on), violent criminals (what a great old time they would have), and terrorists (they could toss bombs at one anoth- er). It’s a law of history and nature that every society needs That's. what the French did with Devil's Island in’ South America, that’s what-the Brit- ish did with Botany Bay in Australia, and that’s what the Russians have always done with Siberia. e 8 6 If you keep telling a kid he's a failure, he'll probably become one; and if you keep telling a community its “racist,” it might just get that way. As the proverb has it, when you have the name, you may as well have the game. . . * The Duke of Wellington was strongly opposed to uni- versal schooling; he said it would produce “educated dev- ils"; and events have proved him half-right. * «© @ Marry for money. Recently Canadians received two solemn warnings which should be heeded. John Humphrey, president Communist countries or the: of the Canadian Human Rights Foundation and a former head of the United Nations civil tights division, warned that Ottawa's precautions against document the ministers claim would prejudice Canada’s in- ternational relations, national defence or security. The gov- ernment has already used this might p develop into what would be “to all intents and purposes a police state. ANOTHER MONTREAL organization, the Quebec Hu- man Rights League, enumera- ted some of the steps that have already been taken to place certain officials above the law and to curtail the traditional rights enjoyed by citizens. Here are two examples it cited: e The Federal Court Act gives cabinet ministers the tight to prevent any court, from the Supreme Court of Canada down, from using a Sensitive Cabinet Job Demands (An editorial in the Kelow- na Capital: News.) ASIDE FROM THE OB- vious case of Human a Change dumping a herbicide into Okan-’ agan Lake, which is a domestic and irrigation reservoir for Minister Bill Vander Zalm, who is devoid of empathy with the less fortunate’in sdciety when ~ such sentiment conflicts with the pocketbook, Premier Bill Bennett has another sensitive cabinet job that demands a change. That, of course, is the ‘environmental ministry post which the new Social Credit government created. JIM NIELSEN, AN OPEN The might reasonably remark that in London and New York, it's not baby seals but old and blind and disabled human beings who get hunted and clubbed down— sometimes for money, some- times just for the sport of it. I read in the New York papers about a 17-year-old who con- fessed to murdering a Man- hattan lawyer, 84, and his partly crippled wife, 78, in the apartment. Both were stran- gled with neckties. I read also about a pair of twins, 20, who've committed a long string of such crimes, One twin is doing time for beating up a woman of 82 and taking $2 from her. The other was released from jail last December after doing four years for attacking an elderly couple; now he's charged with another such, beating up a man and wife, 80 and 70, in their home. “THE CROSSAOAOS OF THE KOOTENAYS" Founded on August 7, 1947 CASTLEGAR NEWS Publisher trom Aug. 7, 1947 to Feb. 15, 1973 L.V. NIEL- sen gung-ho on the i law 'to keep froma Quebec inquiry documents bearing on alleged illegal police activities in that province and to prevent a similar inquiry in Alberta from finding out about a dubious agreement permit- ting the RCMP to scrutinize tax records. e Under amendments to the Immigration Act passed last year, an individual threat- ened with deportation can be deprived of his right to a court hearing by the minister of immigration on the basis of secret security or criminal intelligence reports. Other recent instances of the same end should also be noted—the disclosure that the RCMP is now authorized to examine income tax returns, hitherto considered strictly confidential, and the conviction of a Montreal man for an offence under the Official Sec- rets Act in a trial which was kept completely secret. AND NOW THERE ARE plans in Ottawa for a new law front, he also thinks communi- ties that desire to control their own growth are somehow sabo- taging the provincial economy, an attitude that might be understandable in the minister of economic development or the minister of mines and petro- leum resources but not in the minister of environment. There are some serious weaknesses in the present cabi- net and Mr. Bennett should move to rectify them before the government loses credibility even among its otherwise staunch supporters, CYRIL SHELFORD PROB- ably would have been an excellent choice for the post but he's indicated disenchantment with provincial politics, so he is likely out of the picture. In the present cabinet, Recreation and Conservation Minister Sam Bawlf appears to be a person of some environmental sensitivity who coulde do justice to the portfolio. Yet Another Richard ‘Victimized’ by Media (From an editorial in the Vancouver Sun.) WITH THE HELP OF HIS henchmen, he killed one broth- er, usurped the throne of another, murdered his two young nephews and offered to trade his kingdom for a horse. Anyone who has seen Shake- speare's Richard II] knows the “murd'rous villain" only too well. But wait. Could we have been a little hasty in our judg- ment of the man? Is it possible, as the Richard III Society in England maintains, that he was, for his time, a wise ruler and an all-round nice guy? That like another Richard, ‘five cen- turies later, he becarne the victim of a dastardly media campaign, more vilified than vilifying? OF COURSE, A LOT OF water has passed under the gate, but it’s really too much to believe that Shakespeare was a Tudor fink. That's almost as hard to take as one society member's contention that Rich- ard III's case is “a historical extension of Watergate. In 500 years, no one has come forward and done an investigative re- porting job.” And you thought an 18- minute gap was intriguing. TROUBLED BY HIGH PRICES-?
