(AP) — Dan Seals, who as England Dan sang with John Ford Coley, has a new dream. Seals, who broke up with Coley in December 1979, is pursuing a country music career the same way Kenny Rogers did in the mid-1970s after Rogers's group, the First Edition, broke up. “I hope I have just a portion of the success he’s had,” says the soft-spoken, 35-year-old singer-guitarist, who is using his real name rather than England Dan. ince August 1982, Seals has released three country music singles. The latest is You Really Go for the Heart. ‘album, Rei of a rock vein and I wanted more of an accoustical sound. And there were differénces of opinion over management. We decided to creatively ko in different directions. “I miss the security of it,” he said. “We were raised real simple in Texas (Dallas). We weren't a poverty situation, but lower-middle class. We had dreams about ‘making it,’ but all that dream was ambiguous. When it got there, we had to be everywhere and be gone from our families. It was the fast lane; I don’t miss that.” After the breakup, Seals quit using England Dan and began going by his own name because “I thought it would be more honest.” He had used England Dan so that the has-beew-exposed to-the copmtry: music “eld gaade 8 ‘All it takes isa three- minute tune that's a hit' opening act at concerts headlined by Alabama, Canadian singer Anne Murray, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers and others. When England Dan and Coley broke up to pursue separate careers, Seals said he was presented with another goal: a country music career. “All my dreams came true and then I was left with nothing,” said Seals, whose brother, Jimmy, is the Seals of Seals and Crofts. “It's lonely at the top; all you can do is try to stay’ there. You don't have a’ dream to follow. “Now I've got a dream again. It’s like building from the ground floor up.” KNOWN FOR ROCK England Dan and Coley are best known for their soft rock songs such as I'd Really Love to See You Tonight, Love is the Answer and Nights Are Forever. All were hits a decade ago. Coley now lives in Oceanside, Calif, where he is a performer and songwriter. “We just came to the end of the road together,” Seals said about the breakup. We had-done everything. John wanted to go to more bic Hdn't feel he ing off the fame of the Seale-oame made-famous by bPother-simmy> what given him the England Dan handle because it sounded good, NAME IMPORTANT “Your name is an important part of the business,” Seals said. About Jimmy, he said, “I'm proud of my big brother. He's always believed in me and kept me up spiritually. It's helped tp have _ around who said all it takes is a three-migute tune that's a hit.” He moved to Nashville and began singing music with a country flavor that he says is not too far removed from his duet tunes, “Our sound was consistent with country music. Now, my sound is not all that different. Some country music fans already knew me. “I was raised country. I sing country. I feel country.” He can't remember hearing anything except country music untit he was 10 years old. He and Jimmy were part of a family band that played country music back in Texas. Seals, who is putting together a five-piece band, said he has been pleasantly surprised by his success in the country field. “| figured it would take five years to convince people I mean business. I figured only sticking to it would do it.” He said he has not been disappointed that his three country music singles have not “crossed over” to the adult contemporary charts where his duet songs dominated. “Tye got what I wanted; you can’t have it all. My object is to’ set myself in country music.” CasNews Photo Next door to Konkin's Irly Bird Store on the Waterfront Esplanade. DELUXE DAILY LUNCHEON SMORG 11:30-6.m. +0 2 p.m. $6.95. Except for people of nor- milk because it causes intes- tinal discomfort. The new research shows yogurt contains a digestive enzyme that these adults lack, so the food's milk sugar is broken down and absorbed in the body. Babies make an enzyme called lactase that allows LIMITED QUANTITY ¥ ‘ them to digest milk sugar, known as lactose. When they reach adulthood, however, most people produce little of this enzyme, so they havé trouble digesting milk sugar¢: - They are said to be lactase deficient. About three-quarters of the adults around the world are believe@ to be lactase deficient. For them, drinking milk often causes gas, bloat- ing, cramps and diarrhea. This condition is less common in the United States, where many people are of northern European ancestry. “The gist of this study was to show that the bacteria in yogurt make lactase, and the lactase is able to survive the passage through the digest- ive tract,” said: Kolars. “It’s on athe act in the human's Yogurt is made by fermen. ting with two kinds of bacteria, bul- garicus and Streptococcus thermphilus. These organ- isms, make lactase, the mis- sing enzyme. The lactase ‘does not break down the milk sugar while yogurt is still in the container, because the food is too acidic and cold for the enzyme to work. Once the yogurt is eaten and makes its way into the small intestine, the enzyme goes to work. It breaks down the milk sugar so it can be absorbed inte the body. In short, the yogurt digests itself. A report of the study, conducted at the Veterans Administration Medical Cen- tre and -.
