Casthégar News 0's. 196 GROUP HELPS PARENTS FIND MISSING KIDS CALGARY (CP) — The twang of guitars fills the room as people two-step across the dance floor. A cloud of cigarette smoke hangs in the air and the draft beer flows cool and fast. The scene at the North Country Inn is typical of a country bar in Calgary, but with one difference. The dance is a benefit for the Tania Murrell Missing Children's Society A glass jar sits on a small table by the door, stuffed with dollar-bill donations for the society, which helps parents find their missing children. Although people are enjoying the social gathering, they haven't forgetten about the missing children. “Sure, I came here because it’s a good-time bar,” said Steve Kozan. “But I'm also here because I know that any dollar I can give might help find a missing kid. And you can’t put a price on that. “A lot of these people came down tonight because of the benefit,” Kozan said. “I have my own kids and so do a lot of them, and we all know it would just be hell to have one of our kids missing.” Of all the missing children featured on the wall posters, Tania Murrell seems to have touched people's hearts the most. Tania, a six-year-old blond with a sunny disposition, disappeared Jan. 20, 1983, during a two-block walk between her school and her Edmonton home. No one has seen her since. HOPE LINGERS But hope lingers on for her mother, Vivian, who believes Tania now is a healthy 10-year old. “I have a gut feeling that she's alive,” Murrell said while in Calgary to organize the week's benefit shows, which feature Ray Sawyer, leader of the now defunct Dr. Hook band “When I look at. Tania’s picture, as her mother I know that she's still out there somewhere,” the 29-year-old Murrell says with conviction. Murrell can feel other parents’ pain when their missing children turn up dead, but she believes that if her daughter had been killed the body would have been found. So the search continues. Tania’s smiling face has been plastered on shampoo bottles, milk cartons and posters across the continent. Police have followed leads from Alaska to Africa. The society, which was federally incorporated as a non-profit organization in October 1985, helps parents whose children disappear by eroviding expertise, public support and money for the search. About 100 children have been reunited with their parents with the help of the society, which is working to locate another 21 children. Although Murrell says the society has been successful in educating people about child abduction, she said public awareness of children who are still missing is lagging. “People are forgetting about the kids who are still missing — kids like Tania,” Murrell said. “Without people being aware of these kids, it's impossible to find them.” Our Action Phone your advertising dollars do better in.
