CASTLEGAR NEWS, November 18, 198) One man’s opinion Teachers today By FRED MERRIMAN Ho hum, diddley dum and here we go again. The Jeachers wonted a: 27 ) per cent increase over one year. The kids tell me that dek and that } were not allowed in the schools before 8:: 40 Py ror and had to vacate the premises during lunch hour, The now-common words like work to rule, job action and binding arbitration were part of our breakfast conversation for several weeks, The tax payers, as represented by the school board, dand led as the f! crun- ch became reality. Here is how | see the situation: 1 don’t think the teachers should have to supervise lunch and recess A room activities, unless they get paid for their time, | also agree with the teachers on the subject of work after the “day shift’ HAS finished. | would also question why it is necessary for teachers to involve themselves in extra- cirricular activities with or without pay. | was never involved in any extra- curricular activity while going to school and | don’t feel short-changed. The teachers should | ave a sey, fy working | conditions. ' understand that it would be of the local school board before that is ataitlog Perha; ope ee time is appropriate for the ministry of education to include working conditions in the bargaining process. Now for a few negatives: The education process has been allowed to grow into an all-encompassing system that is expected to educate, entertain and amuse the children while away from their absent mommys and daddies. { Cookbooks and other things By LUCY ELLEN EATON In a_ recent issue of STROPHES, Wuaneta Hack- leman, president of the NSFPS, wrote an interesting resume of best-sellers from 1934 until the present time. She had been searching for the name of any poet that might have made the best- seller list in that time. Only one poet had — Rod McKeun, for his book LISTEN TO THE WARM. It had not made the top 10, however. She stated that the best- seller's list for the past decade has been sensual sex, cookbooks and weight control books — and in that order. “One is forced to wonder what has gone wrong in the literary arena in America,” she lamented. of the cook- The teachers have all and their own emp have encouraged the | ideo — priests, faiher and eho and policeman. They also shall be p: , boy scout leader and Sunday school teacher, all rolled into one. I say that is unfair on the teacher. On this basis, the teachers are completely underpaid. Therefore the education system is going to require a return to the concept that parents must take over much more of the education of their children themselves and leave the teachers to the specifics of the subject for which they are.paid. One senior educator explained to me that our school system is primarily a socializing ex- perience. Whatever happened to good old reading, writing and ‘rithmetic? lalso took Pp of the most mis: hedule of rep wages as justification for rather ible wage d ds. Anne Jones made the point that teachers are employed barely nine months. Pernaps she overlooked the fact that many teachers work 10 and 12 hours a day in those nine months. Nevertheless, her point is well taken. | know many construction workers who would make the wages listed if they were steadily employed for 12 months of the year. Most of them are not. ls construction work more attractive because of good wages? Then | would suggest those teachers who are unhappy with the disparity should put on the rain slicker, don the hard hat and walk knee-deep in the mud for most of the day with roaring machinery and physically burn yourself out by the time you are 40 or an alcoholic, whichever comes first. Some do make it all the way through but they are men of steel. Compare but please be fair. Seek change but please be reasonable — and professional. J \ The book, no doubt, has led to the big demand for the weight control books for the calorie- conscious people who yet love to eat. There are even cookbooks written that link love (in the No. 1 best-seller sense) with food — two of the primal urges of man that are linked to his fleshly frame. But in that earthen vessel which is a person's frame, there is an almost untapped resource of pleasure... the mind; and it is more lasting in its results than the body that houses it. Far too long has our edu- cational system (no doubt through pressure) exalted the physical prowess about the intellectual and artistic. The child gifted in these lat- ter respects has been put down by his peers in such a way as to cause him or her to withdraw into a shell. In- stead of awards for prowess in these fields, his accom- plishments are ignored, or he is scoffingly dubbed “the brain,” and his company shunned. If equal attention and rec- ognition were given to those who excelled in this regard — and opportunities for ad- vancement, as is given to hockey and football achiev- ers, it could result in a greater intellectual upswing for Canada. WHATEVER YOU HAVE A MIND TO Some minds are littered like a nuisance ground no order — a chaos of cast-offs, Judge says justice system is a joke HALIFAX (CP) — James Qdo's murder of a five-year- old Halifax girl while he was Leora Nutter heads W.I. The annual meeting of the Robson Women's Institute, held at the home of Mrs. Marion Jenner, saw mem- bers answering roll call by giving articles for a food hamper. It was decided to have a morning coffee party and bake sale on Dec. 2 in the Robson Church Hall at which time the draw for the hamper will take place. A donation was directed to the Legion Poppy Fund. Con- vener reports were read after the secretary's report by Mrs. Jean Fowler: pub- licity and cultural convener — Mrs. Leora Nutter, United Nations convener — Mrs. Alice Metcalf, home econ- omics convener — Mrs. Mee ion Jenner, i Hall (on ,Dec. 9, including also, the vener — Mrs. Ethel Oborne and agriculture convener — Mrs. Phylis Torgelson. Before the meeting ad- journed, provisions were made to have a Christmas dinner meeting at the Church Jehovah's witnesses Meet i Released by Jehovah's Witnesses A two-day convention will be held at the Cominco Gym- nasium in Trail, Nov. 21 and 22 as Jehovah's Witnesses from Trail and the surround- ing West Kootenay area as- semble for Bible instruction and counsel on Christian subjection. On Saturday afternoon, the principle of theocratic subjection found at 1 Corin- thians 11:3 is the basis for the portion, “Theocratic Subjec- tion Yields Peaceable Fruit.” It will show how each person in attendance has a relative position in this over- all arrangement and that by applying this principle in their daily lives, in the fam- ily, the congregation and in their dealings with the sec- things as d with the growing spirit reflecting in- dependence and lack of dis- cipline, the program is ap- propriately themed, “Sub- jecting Ourselves to God”. Under the auspices of two travelling representatives from the new Watchtower Headquarters in George- town, Ont., Larry Gray and Raymond Zwidayk, the pro- gram will follow a two-fold purpose. First, to instili in the hearts of the listeners the desire to build up in them- selves the determination to follow this theme and second, to help them realize the blessings and privileges they can receive as a result of their theocratic subjection. On Saturday morning, newer Witnesses will ex- press their desire to “subject themselves to God” indicat- ular h » it will yield peaceable fruit. The main public address will be given by Gray on Sunday afternoon. All interested persons are invited to join Jehovah's Witnesses for this weekend of spiritual activity. Refresh- ments will be provided at usual gifts for the Children's Hospital Christmas cheer. Mrs. Phylis Torgelson was the recipient of the hostess on ‘y supervision last June is a prime example of what a joke Canada’s corrections system has be- come, according to a retired British Columbia judge. Les Bewley, who resigned after 21 years as a B.C. provincial court judge out of frustration with the criminal justice system, said academ- ies and sociologists have the last 15 years into im- plementing a series of half- baked reform programs. Bewley said two mistakes surface in the Odo case: his original five-year sentence for raping a nine-year-old girl was too short and “the ‘supervision’ in ‘mandatory supervision’ is a vast joke.” Bewley has been writing and travelling across Canada since his retirement, adovcat- ing sweeping changes in the broken bits of bagatelle, soiled, undesirable —- even repulsive, Others are like enticingly filled shelves of a big store or Super- market, filled with every good thing . . a wide choice; something for every need or occasion, Again, some computer-like: giving accurate informa- tion, but no warmth. minds are There are even minds that pf seem like a Christmas grab-bag!
