Oliver Letwin said he wouldn't have believed five years ago that the move toward governments getting out of business would grow as quickly as it has or become so firmly entrenched. But the trend now is so strong it rivals in size the move toward nationalizing industries around the world after the Second- World War, Letwin told an audience of engineers in Regina “There is an enormous revolution that will continue to occur over the next 10 or 20 years," he said HAVING CRAFT FAIR March 2, 3 & Thurs., Fri. & Sat.! British Prime Minister Margaret That cher on privatization between 1983 and 1986 and is now an assistant director of the N.M. Rothschild and Sons Ltd merchant bank in London Letwin downplayed concerns that have been raised about privatization in Saskatchewan. PUBLIC RESPONDS The opposition New Democratic Party recently said the province won't be -able-to-find:enough Saskatchewan investors to buy shares in all the com panies it wants to sell and the firms will end up in the nads of a few wealthy in vestors. But Letwin said wide ownership of privatized companies has been achieved in Britain, France, Japan and Spain “The lure has been there, the will has been there and the public has responded," he said Letwin said privatization can bring about a fundamental change in the at titude of governments as cabinet ministers no longer spend their time defending public companies—and making spending decisions based on their political agenda. Instead, government becomes the regulator which can come down hard when the private firms-don't perform properly, he said. For example, the privatized British Telecom continued to provide telephone service as badly as its public predecessor Instead of defending the company, the government's regulatory com: mission penalized British, Telecom by, among other things, forcing it to pay penalties to customers, Letwin said Blizzards ground Cruise COLD LAKE, Alta.
