NEAL MCKENNA For The Sun They were supposed to relheve chronic jaw, head, and neck pain but the jaw implants that thou sands of people received during the 1980's weren't properly test ed. Now, they've become a medi- cal time bomb. “The pain never goes away,” said Maggy Blommaert of Nel son, “No matter how much or what kind of pain medication | take — And I've been on every- thing from Demerol to Morphine I think I used to be an up-beat sort of person but now, its tough to put on a happy face.” Maggy Blommaert, like so may others in North America, is the victim of a medical mistake At least part of her debilitating pain stems from a total joint replacement device that was implanted into her jaw in 1988. The implant in her right mandible — which was intend- ed to last a lifetime — has shattered in less than five years, causing teflon and other foreign materials to spread throughout her body. This lat- est operation was the most recent of six similar surgical procedures performed on her jaw in the last 20 years. Unfortunately, Maggy is not an isolated case. Some are shocking- ly disfigured. Others have com- mitted suicide to escape the pain Still others are unaware of the cause of their physical problems. “What often is worse than the physical pain,” says Maggy, “is being written off by your friends and even your doctor as a hypochondriac.” =Grenby Faced with an uncertain future and high medical costs, Nelson woman Maggy Blommaert, a hairdresser by trade, It all started for Maggy as an injury to the temporomandibular joint (better known as the TMJ) more than 22 years ago. For those who don't know, the TM joint connects the lower jaw to the skull just in front of the ears The major symptom of TMF Disorder is excruciating pain in the jaw, face, head, or neck. The jaw can lock open or shut at any time, without warning. It is difficult to chew or talk and simple, everyday things like yawning or laughing become painful. Worse yet, the malady is seeking financial assistance from working peers and other caring individuals Phot submitted is problematic to diagnose Aside from the pain caused by the disinte implants, M general ill hea amount of drugs her body contin- ually needs to function at a level that passes for normal. In 1991, her gall bladder shut down com pletely weeks in Nelson Hospitalized for several she came very close to dying at that same time Becaise of associated chronic digestive problems, she is only able to operate her shop three days a week To be direct, Maggy Blom. maert is at a physical and finan. cial low ebb. B.C, Medical Services Plan will provide up to $650 Canadian dollars each day she is hospitalized but American hospital fees can easily amount to $1,000 per day—and that's US funds we're talking about Other expenses to be incurred are airfare, hotel accommoda- tion, and meals for two separate occasions. Before.the spring of next year, Maggy must travel to Santa Monica, California, for an assessment. Later, she will return to the United States for the actual surgical procedure. Maggy Blommaert has been a hairdresser for 25 years and a member of the B.C. Hair dressers Association for more than nine years. Since her arrival in British Columbia, she has been a vital, contributing Association member regionally and provincially. Now, faced with specialized and expensive surgery, Maggy needs the sup port-and assistance of her peers. In Nelson, Maggy’s long-time associate, Robert Verigin, is organizing a fund raising Cut-A- Thon for Saturday, November 13 with all proceeds going to the Maggy Fund. If you can coordi- nate such a venture in your com. munity on Maggy Blommaert's behalf, or donate an hour of your earnings, or even send the price of one haircut, it would help Any financial assistance would be much appreciated by Maggy, and her fundraising friends. It's truc, We will look at why, what we can do to lessen the effects of sugar in the diet, and at some healthy snacking alternatives. This information applies to everyone, but is especially impor- tant for children. Children’s teeth, although not permanent, are important for properly aligned, healthy adult teeth. Not only are children’s teeth forming but also good or bad eating and dental habits are forming, and children often need between meal snacks. When we eat foods that con- tain sugar, bacteria (called plague) combine with sugar to produce an acid. This acid eats away at tooth enamel and can cause cavities. Therefore, tp avoid cavities we want to: 1. Cut down the number of times per day our teeth are exposed to sugar. 2. Avoid “sticky” sweets that stick in the crevices between the teeth, such as toffee, fruit leather, caramel popcorn, raisins, honey with peanut butter, and chewy cookies. 3. Limit sugar containing foods that are in the mouth for a long time, such as gum and candy 4. Brush teeth after cating to remove the sugar If sugar and sweets are to be eaten the best time is at a meal Saliva flow is highest at meals Jean Charman and this helps to neutralize thé effects of the sugar. When a nutritious between meal snack is needed, try these good dental snacks: white milk, cheese chunks or cottage cheese, plain yogurt, bread or unsweet- ened cereal, nuts, seeds, vegetables or fru cooked egg or peanut butter on crackers. Thése should be fol lowed up with a good brushing! Even crispy, crunchy vegetables help “clean” during the day when we are not able to brush our teeth Beware of fruit juice! Fruit juice, even diluted, if sipped slowly throughout the day, is bathing the teeth in sugar. Fruit juice lacks the fibre of fresh fruit and is often not thought of as a “food”. Water is thirst quench ing, sugar-free, convenient, and and it helps rinse food from the surface of our teeth. Some times children will find water tastes better from a special glass or water bottle, or sipped through a straw. If children learn to enjoy water at an early age they will reap the rewards for the rest of their lives. ‘ and con What do you do with the bag of goodies that your youngster triumphantly brought home this Hallowe'en? From a strictly den- tal point of view, allowing @ binge is better than doling the candy out a little at a time. You might also consider “buying” some of the stickier candies from you child. In summary, try to plan good dental snacks, serve sweets with meals rather than between, and follow meals and snacks by a good brushing whenever ‘possi- ble, as soon as possible.
