another viewpoint on The Fam-
ily. This week's contributor is

ALL OF US COPY THE
people around us.

We wear the same style of
clothes, as everyone else. We
like certain television programs
becaude our friends do. We go"
golfing on Sunday:! morning
insteafl: of to church because
that’s? ithe thing to do these
days. ';+

1s NOT ALL BAD TO
copy: cat your culture.

: If; we had to make up our
minds: about absolutely every-

‘we'd be presented daily
with in impossible number of
decisiéns to make. Going along
with the traditions of our time
saves a lot of energy for more
important matters.

BUT MANY PEOPLE
are increasingly worried about
some of the practices which are

becoming an acceptable part of
modern culture. A casual atti-
tude toward marriage, violence
in sports, pornography, ex-
cessive alcohol consumption—
these are just a few of the
modern traditions many think-
ing people do not want every-
one to copy.

Practically speaking, how
can we possibly stand against
the tide of popular opinion?
How can we expect to protect
ourselves and our youth from
drifting with the changing
times?

MY ANSWER: THROUGH
the family.

Let your family be a sub-
culture.

Make it clear that no
matter what everyone else
around you does, in your family
you have your own ways of
thinking and acting.

LET IT BE CLEAR, FOR
instance, that in your family
there is no foul language, sports
are for fun rather than for
glory, God is believed in and
respected, healthy habits of
good eating, exercise and rest

are practised, and whatever
you would add to this list as
being of primary importance.

I would suggest that
youngsters will be loyal to their
family traditions ahead of those
of the surrounding culture, if
family traditions are enthusias-
tically upheld throughout the
growing years.

OF COURSE, IT’S HARD
to be the only family that
stands for certain - unusual
things.

It helps to find other
families that also believe in
clean language, clean fun, God,
health, and all the rest.

One thing the Church can
be is a gathering of like-minded
families who will stand to-

gether for a better quality life -

than the trends of the sur-
rounding eulture.
