In thelr wake have come a horde of lobbyists, public relationsmen, people with demands for this, that and the other thing, and all hope to get a cabinet minister or a Member into a corner in one of the corridors and give him a good talking to about a Part- lcular problem. Often these people come away feeling the govern- mont doesn’t love them, and they wonder what to do next to get their point across, z Such was the situation in British Columbla before the turn of the century, but in those days there weren't PRmen etc., to carry out persuasion campaigns. . Now it s0 happened that the miners in the Weat Koo- tenay felt very strongly thot the Canadian Pacific Railway was dictating to the p what the rules and regulations for mining should be. On this stand they were probably right. Delegation after delegation went down to Victoria to ' meet with the premier, the Hon. John Robson, to get the mining act changed in favor of the poor but honest miner” Instead of the rich and fat railway tycoons. tt did no good. Victoria woutdn’t listen. In Revelstoke at this time there was a man by the name of Kellie, who had a magnificent nickname. “Pot-Hole.” How he got this name Is probably forgotten, but what he did in Revelstoke has never been forgotten, for he took direct action to solve the mining problem in this area. We do net counsel -similar action, but Pot-Hole Kellie “kidnapped” the Honorable the Premier of British Columblal Robson was on a speaking. tour of the province and he stopped in Revelstoke for a while, and while there; the miners, led by Pot-Hole hatched a plot. Very-polite-like they enticed the premier to go on a sight-seeing trip around Reveistoke and in all innocence Robson was delighted to go along. Time passed by and Pot-Hole talked to the premier about the injustices of the mining act and demanded action. Robson looked at his watch, and to his horror found that the train would be just about ready to leave. Keilie was, of course, very sympathetic but firm. It was too bad, he ssid, that the premier had missed ; his train, but perhaps it was all for the best, for now lie could have the opportunity of meeting with the. miners themselves and hear their complaints first hand. Robson was not.too happy about this arrangement for he knew if would be'a pretty nasty confrontation, but he agreed to attend a public meeting provided he was per-” mitted to go incognito and sit somewhere in the back where. he wouldn't be. noticed. That night :he, the provincial government, ‘he: CPR’ and mining act were all really roasted by the frate miners," but after the meeting, Rebson told Kellie he would sea that changes were made. ‘Lo:and behold, at the next session of the Legislature 1 8 whole-new! mining: act was -brought down that- included the changes the miners of the West Kootenay’ ‘wanted. =e h For Pot-Hole Kellie it) opened’ up a new: Senior Citizens Committees Named Mrs, resid- ent ot the Castles Benlor itizens = Associat gir Bento has Funeral services were pea ud Saturday from St. Dav- cae her committee mem- nalican Church for bers for th 1972 Hoginat Sibley, 79, of Cas operations.
