It is believed the aircraft, which narrowly missed cabin No. 6, struck a large log on the edge of the bank with the plane making a skid landing on its belly. Three School District No. 9 Teachers Honored at Banquef by School Board A founder of the local Castlegar District Teachers’ Association, W. R. Whittaker, was one of three School District No, 9 teachers honored recently at a retirement party by the board of trustees at the Hi Arrow Arms, Honored with Mr. Whit- taker were Mrs. Pat Romaine with 85 years of service and Mrs. J. B. Mackereth who has {aught in this schoo! district for the past 17 years. The ladies were presented with handcrafted Jewelry while Mr. Whittaker received an electric grass trimmer, Attending the supper were trustees and their spouses as well as Superintendent of Schools G. Born in Kaslo, Mr. Whit- faker graduated from UBC with his BA and MA, and first worked in the ammonia plant at Cominco for 12 years before turning to teaching. He became’ Castlegar's Kinnaird Public Library first high school teacher and for four years taught in a one-room high school on Columbia Ave. On June 18 Mr. Whittaker was honored by fellow staff members of Stanley Humphries Secondary School who pre- sented him with numerous humorous gifts and a mlcro- scope, He was also honored with an honorary mombership to the BCTF by Jim Corbott for his contribution to the federa- lion, ‘ Observation Is Kept On Sawdust Fire Fifteen fires have been reported so far to the local Forestry Service with the most recent being Saturday at the sewerage lagoon. Little damage has been caused by this fire which is in old sawdust and is presently being kept under observation. Last Thursday a small spot fire, caused by a CP Rail locomotive, was also reported. This work is being done on the LIP grant. Bingos are being held Friday nights, alternate weeks, between New Denver and Silverton halls to raise funds for the arena. On ‘Wednesday of last week a community shower was held in Silverton’s Memorial Hall for bride-elect Kerry Lou Gordon whose marriage takes place this Saturday. The New Denver Village Council has met with the representative of the Parents’ Group giving its approval to the plans for the proposed play- ground.
