Robson boy discovers transmitter By CasNews Staff Nine-year-old Phillip Soukachoff thought it was part of an old car motor when he first discovered a small electronic unit on a rock while fishing near Keenleyside Dam three weeks ago. But when the Robson Elementary School student looked closer, he could see an address through the clear plastic covering. He mailed it off. Earlier this month, Soukachoff received a letter from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Cook, Wash., explaining the unit was a radio transmitter originally placed in the body cavity of a walleye on May 12, 1983. The fish was then released at Spokane River bay of Lake Franklin D. Roosevelt northwest of Spokane — about 200 kilometres south of Castlegar. “The walleye travelled 75 kilometres before the radio signal was lost on July 18, 1983,” says the letter from Lance Beckman, fishery biologist. “Tracking was done by airplane once each week. Several other walleye have also been known to migrate upstream to Keenleyside Dam. New Yorkers losing faith in police force By LARRY BLACK NEW YORK (CP) — New York City has a crime problem, as anyone who has ever visited the place or watched an evening of television knows. Bernie Goetz apparently thought so, and the strap-hanging jury on the uptown IRT Express is still out on the justice of his subway vigilantism last December. In the meantime, New York bar talk has turned to the city’s next most controversial crime figures — the city’s 17,000 police officers. they put to his temple accidentally discharged. Last month, a restaurant manager who tried to stop an off-duty cop from kidnapping an ex-girlfriend was handcuffed and kicked in the face. This week, a 17-year veteran of the force was convicted of trying to hire a hitman to kneecap a business partner. Last weekend, Alex Mengel — the ac- cused murderer captured last month in Toronto — was shot dead in the back of an unmarked police car while being transported from a court appearance. Police say Mengel seized a gun from Church to fight Sunday shopping LONDON (REUTER) — The Church of England says it will fight government proposals to allow shops to trade freely on Sundays.
