The ministry also an nounced that more than four million kokanee fry emerged from the Hill Creek spawning channel on the Upper Arrow Lake at Galena Bay. Robert Lindsay, fisheries biologist with the Ministry of Environment, said in a news release that rainbow trout the Arrow However, he added that in the first four years of the program the number of fish released was less than 5,000. Most of the trout released in June were produced at the Hill Creek hatchery with some produced in the net pen located at Scotties Mar ina. All of the trout released have been marked by clip- ping a combination of fins. Anglers are reminded to check their catch for the fin clips and to report any marked fish to the local con- servation officer or to the fisheries office in Nelson. Lindsay added in the re- lease that this is the second consecutive year that large numbers of kokanee fry have been produced from adult fish spawning naturally in the newly constructed chan nel at Hill Creek. Lindsay says the egg to fry survival rate in the channel was 47 per cent, 10 times better than natural stream production. The expected adult return from the four million fry in four years is 400,000, or 10 looks good per cent fry to adult survival. Lindsay added that the expected kokanee adult re- turn of about 100,000 to the channel this fall should create a productive sport fishery in the Shelter Bay and Galena Bay areasof the Arrow Lakes. Kokanee should migrate and school up in these areas this month and in August before entering the creek to spawn. Last year, kokanee fishing in the area was quite good, Lindsay said, adding that he expects it to be the same this year. Pulpit & Pew By REV. JIM FERRIER Grace Presb: Church What's the problem? Who's the answer? In I Samuel 28, was find that Saul recognized witchcraft as a public evil. Understandably, he went about clearing up this prob- lem and had it banished from the land. Within days, Saul called these same witches back to clear up yet another problem. Harry Emerson Fosdick refers to this as one of the most “human” of Scripture Amanr izi on it's: “No, wait — I need some counsel . . . bring them back!” We are all like that: Even when the issue is glaringly obvious, we fluctuate be- tween being the problem and being a part of the answer. That the world is full of problems is not news. That we are able to identify and articulate a given problem is also nothing new. However, when the pro- cess goes no further, identi- fying problems isn't especi- a public evil — but when the crunch comes, he himself be comes a part of the problem. “Get rid of these witches!” was the cry in the land. Later ally pi ive. We cease to develop and then become a part of the problem. Too often, we don't look toward being a part of the answer because of what it involves. Addressing our problems — not to mention their lution — against seemingly insur mountable odds and comes through with faith and cour age eS and un requires an openness to change. That, in turn, neces- sarily involves upheaval on a personal and general level. We opt for a route that seems to involve less effort and hassle now. Unfortu- nately, that route seldom yields satisfactory results. The question remains: are we a part of the problem or a part of the answer. There's nothing in this world that is so inwardly up- lifting as someone who is up Rick Hansen and his Man in Motion tour is a continuing demonstration of this. I sus- pect that each of us can think of at least one personal story or example. As a Christian, I marvel at this so uniquely human char acteristic that is instilled in us. As a Christian, I also pray that each of us this day will know the indwelling spirit of Jesus Christ: that spirit that draws us toward being a part of the answer.
