Melisse suffers
from anorexia

MONTREAL (CP)'—- A giant fridge, its clear plastic
door revealing mounds of food ‘inside, stands ominously at
centre stage as a frightened woman circles around it
aimlessly.

"To the outside world, Melisse is a glamorous model who
has it all. In fact, she's suffering from anorexia and
bulimia.

She alternates between long periods of fasting and
binges of eating followed by vomiting.

“T can eat as much as I want,” she says to the audience,
sortie of whom are feeling a little queasy by her performance.
“Vomiting afterwards has a’ calming éffect.”

As played by actress Danielle Bissonnette, Meliase is, in
turn, pathetic and funny, insecure and appealing.

At the start of her one-woman show at the Milieu
theatre, J'ai fin (a play on the French terms for “I'm hungry”
and “I'm finished”), Melisse confidently struts about,

“recounting anecdotes about her love life and career as a
model.

Slowly, the mask eracks and her shiny, high-tech
apartment takes on the look of a prison. Melisse's obsession
with beauty and weight begins to take its toll physically and
emotionally.

“I also wanted to be perfectly beautiful when I was
younger,” recalls Bissonnette, who co-wrote the play. “I was
on draconian diets and ended up suffering from anorexia, but
not in the same dramatic or prolonged way as in the play.”

The 33-year-old actress, well known in Quebec as the
barmaid in a popular TV beer commercial, said she began.
writing the play long before anorexia become a trendy topic.

“I find that anorexia is one of the most disturbing
sicknesses of our times,” the striking blond actress said in an
interview.

“It's the result of women trying to attain the perfect
physical state as described to them by TV and films.”

Anorexia is also a search for love, “since love in this fast
age is an ephemeral thing and to*hold on to it, you must be
your most perfect self — the slimmest possible.”
te realizes that her performance tends to

unnerve some of the people in the audience as she whirls
maniacally around the kitchen, reeling off the numbers of
calories in each of the foods she has just consumed and
compulsively weighing herself.

With dramatic flourishes, she whips out bags of junk
food, tears them open and shovels the contents. into her
mouth. But every time she looks as if she’s about to go over
the edge, she comes back and takes hold of herself.

Bissonnette, who will tour Quebec extensively with
the play this year, admits that one problem with her role is
that physically, she has none of the characteristics of an

. anorexic and may even be a few pourtds over her ideal
weight.

She can't afford crash diets because she has to be in top
physical shape to take care of her baby. “If I were in a film, I
would consider starving myself as a one-shot deal. But in a
play that may go on for months and even years, I can't do
that.”

Melisse ends the play on a seemingly optimistic note.
She appears to be coming to terms with gaining a few
pounds and seems worn out.
