DO) : ROTHY BARKER St. David’s Anglican Church Some years ago, I had to get my d twice in tien society affects the other Pe Recently we have had the one year, When my eye doctor exam- ined me, he was surprised that there was such a significant change in my sight in so short a time. I mentioned that I had had some major surgery in the interval, but that what hap- pened in one part of the body should not effect what happened in another part of the body. Of course he laughed and so did I because it is fairly obvious that what happens in one part of our body does indeed affect the rest of the body. So it is, I believe, with the body we call society, although we are not always able to see or accept that. We like to break down our society into its many component parts for ease of conversation, analysis, and so on, and some- times miss the relati y experience of serious vandalism occurring in our com- munity. Also there is no denying that we live, in our wider communi- ty, in a society of ever-increas- ing violence. British Columbia has the dis- tinction of having the highest rise in the crime rate in the country. The reasons behind these trends are no doubt complex and varied, but there is another set of istics that is understanding, training and teaching alone is responsible for the increase in violence in our society. Nor do I wish to suggest that what religion is all about is primarily the teaching and imposing of moral codes, God forbid. What religion is about is God and our mutual relationship with God and God with us. What violence is about — and that includes all forms of vio- lence from vandalism to its extreme in murder and mas- sacre, is lack of respect, lack of respect for the other, for his Nal alongside. That has to do with church attendance and religious affiliation, The number of people claim- ing a religious affiliation and regularly attending a place of worship has been steadily declining for many years in our part of the world, and B.C. has the lowest figure in church So we talk and write and study about various groups within society, business, indus- d of any provi in Canada. I must say that it is surpris- ing to me that these two pat- terns of behavior, statistically d, seem never to be try, labor, management, produc- ers, adults, chil q male, female, rich and poor. And yet we are all one soci- ety, one body. That society, too, is made up of many units, fami- lies, neighborhoods, churches, clubs, towns, cities, provinces. But all are inter-related. What happens in one part of seen side by side. Does what happens, or not happen in the case of religion, in one aspect of our life together as a society affect another aspect of that life? God is about respect for the other, car- ing for the other, love for the other. Sadly, God and the church have been seen as being about rules, about moral codes that are oppressive. What has been missed is what is behind the rules and moral codes. We have missed that most amazing fact - that God respects us, and if we wish to be God-like, if we wish to live in harmony and peace, then we must respect others. But if we do not know God, and if we do not know about ind we do not know what God is like, then how shall we know how to be? Piano stud in the region will-be interested in an inten- sive class with David Itogosin, former head of the School of Music at David Thompson, who will teach keyboard harmonies and improvisation, the school says. Kristina Sutor will teach a piano workshop focusing on stylistic, technical and interpre- tive challenges. Both piano courses are offered between July 8 and 12. The Canada Council is co- sponsoring a writer-in-residence with Holley Rubinsk author of Rapid Transits and Other Stories. She will lead a fiction writing workshop for intermediate writ- ers and give a public reading of her work on July 16. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!!
