The first Monte Christo sale for many a long week was recorded this morning when a block of 2000 brought 6c on the stock exchange. The stock had been absolutely quiet and the sale today is causing much interest as a possible precursor to a movement for starting up the prop- erty. Giant is weaker, and the prevail- ing price this morning was 834c, al- though two blocks brought ge. Total dealings in Giant were 16,000 shares. The contract was lét to- day by E. D. Saunders to Frank Mendenhall for. supplying at . 10- drill electrical compressor, similar to the one secured bythe California. It will be erected at once. Okanogan is firm aronnd 10%. Montreal, Tuesday.—For some fous quarters that a railway might be constructed between Republic in the state of Washington, and Grand Forks in British Columbia, and now Clarence McCraig returns to Montreal from the west with the announcement that such a railway will be built. J. Davis, ‘together with a memoran- dum from the director of mines, Acchibald Blue, it is proposed to “renew the negotiations opened with the British government in April, 1891, which had for their ob- ject the concession of an interest in the nickel ore of the ungranted lands of the crown for imperial and national uses, on such terms as may be mutually agreed upon.” The object of these negotiations js to secure the control of the nickel ore Jands to the British government which could thus control the pro- duction of nickel, holding it as a monopoly, and using it only for its own war vessels. Relics of Pioneer Mining. Nelson, B. C., Tuesday,—In dig- ging for the foundation of a big gasometer on Saturday, workmen found an old discovery post six feet underground, and the apron of a dam made of cedar shakes, which they traced for eight feet. These are supposed relics of a pioneer placer mine worked early in the seventies. Smallpox In Quebec. Montreal, Tuesday.—Smallpex is raging in Kamouraska county, and an alarming number of cases have come to the knowledge of the authorities, yet no deaths have so far occured. Dr. Beaudry, states that he knows so far of 87 cases. The disease is of a mild type, but infection trom it may be quite as serious as from amore violent type.
