He was from a faraway land and loved to make everyone happy by telling them tales of magical love and mystical princesses. One would think that a man like Tegetthoff would be too good to be true, that storytellers like him existed only in the days of the brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. But Tegetthoff came here to show that fairy tales are alive and well in the 20th century. A native of Austria, Tegetthoff, 29, is visiting 28 countries to narrate his tales. , ,A former medical student, Tegetthoff became aware that there were writers making up fairy tales, but “not living them.” And, he feels, “you can't write about magical places unless you live your life in one.” “What's really important is to have a fairy tale around you every moment... My life changed when I started living like a fairy tale. I started to see, to really see.” His tales go beyond stories for him — they are his way of life. Even the way he chose his wife, Astrid, was like something out of a storybook. He spotted her in a restaurant and said to himself: “ “This is the woman I will marry.’ I knew she was meant to be with me.” WANTS TO TRAVEL His books are best-sellers in Austria and Germany, but he felt he wanted to travel around the world and perform to @ non-European audience. When he decided on a world tour, he wrote to embassies of the countries he wanted to visit. Tegetthoff took on the name “Ada the Pig” in his letters. He explained why: “Ada is a character in my book, Thirteen and One. She is a character who once used to live on earth, but became aware that the spirit can go anywhere it wants.” Tegetthoff said his most successful audience was a group of Filipino children because they were still “unaf- fected by the computer age and still had the ability to believe in fantasy — for them it wasn't a fantasy. It was real.” He said his tales appeal as much to adults as to children and feels that many grown-ups, especially in the western world, want to get back to the fantasy world they loved so much as children. LOSE FEELINGS “When real life sets in, people start to lose feelings and reflections ‘they once had,” Although Tegetthoff speaks English well, he feels he can communicate ‘to his audience, no matter what the language barrier might be. When Tegetthoff performs, he doesn't use a script. He doesn’t even use one of his own tales as a basis for his Program. He ad libs everything. To date, Tegetthoff has compiled seven books on fairy tales. His last book, The Schlabber Schlops, has a moral that says the whole world should be able to communicate as one. , Tegetthoff's books can be found only in Germany, but he hopes to see them translated into English within the year, office Tuesday afternoon at 865-7781 or the Trail office at f HOMEGOODS FURNITURE WAREHOUSE Tues. - Sat., 9:30 - 5:30 China Creek “Drive a Little to Save a Lot” City thrives on grant money PETROLIA, ONT. (CP) — This former oll capital. of Canada has apparently taken to heart the adage of not looking a gift horee in the mouth, resulting in the shedding of its shabby image and the emergence of renewed civic pride. Tho gift horse comprises numerous grants from the federal and provincial governments, lottery corporations and service clubs which the town has actively chased. Chasing grants has seemingly replaced the long-dead oil fields as the major industry of Petrolia, which now serves as ab to nearby Sarnia. Mayor David Hewett estimates more than $16 million has been spent renewing the town of 4,186, adding that’, “we're probably spent less than 25 per cent.of that” from town taxes. The town, whose oil ficlds made it one of the most Prosperous communities in Canada in the late 1800s, slumped badly after the wells ran dry. By the 1960s, the town had “the worst-looking main street I had ever seen,” says Marilyn Jolliffe, who manages the town's antique oil field for tourists, . NOTHING TORN DOWN The only blessing, said Jolliffe, was that the main street was “absolutely so bad that no one bothered to tear anything down,” ae) The Victoria brick buildings lining the main street have been restored, with new brick sidewalks and Victorian-style street lamps adding to the atmosphere. The clock tower on the renovated 1,000-seat Victoria Theatre is being. restored at a cost of $250,000, courtesy of the federal government; The town's renewal also includes a new $10-million | sewer system hooked to a new treatment plant, with the Ontario government picking up 90 per cent of the tab. Federal and provincial grants covered 75 per cent of the of Works commissioner Gabriel Krammer said, the town frequontly receives telephone calls from other asking for advice and tips on how to obtain grants. He said the secret is to have long-range plans ready to go as soon as grants: are announced. . Nor does the town's use of grants result in complaints from those holding the purse strings, says Krammer. In‘fact, Petrolia is often held up as an example to other municipal- ities, i “That's because we have a good track record and have shown that we can bring the projects in on time and budget,” . Krammer said. Hewett said he makes no apologies for Petrolia bbing all the grants it can find. cost ig & par! d. The town r the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation to pick up 25 per cent of:the remaining amount with the result that the town’s taxpayers paid only $19,000 of the $100,000 park project. . The same approach has been used to finance con- struction and upgrading of other parks, glass in a hockey arena and lights ina ball park. . “We do get this criticism that we are just driving up taxes.” But, he said, the projects not only provide jobs but also leave behind “a solid service in the town that will be used for years to come.” “It’s not like spending $20,000 on a study nobody ever reads. We've got sewers, parks, buildings restored and a theatre that 10. years ago wasn't being used.” Hudsons Bay Company Ty Si ee SS neQs ay Trail, B.C. 1/3 TO 1/2 OFF When it comes to big bargains, Discovery Day is the grandaddy of them all!
