Salvage expert unveils
Chinese treasures

AMSTERDAM (REUT-
ER) A British salvage
expert has unveiled a huge
hoard of gold and
, e porcelain worth
more than $4 million raised
last year from a wreck in the
South China Sea.
Michael Hatcher, 45, an-

now, Nanjing, especially
made for the fashionable
dinner-tables of Europe.

CAB DRIVERS

Packed in tea — also meant
for sale — the blue-and-white
porcelain survived the wreck
and two centuries under
water to emerge as bright
and shiny as the day it was
made.

There are 50,000 teacups
and saucers, 18 whole dinner
services and an Aladdin's
cave of teapots, beer mugs,
butter dishes, salt cellars,
gravy boats and chamber

pots.
NEGOTIATING FEE
Hatcher, who lives in Aus
tralia, will not pocket the en
tire proceeds of his discov
ery. Ship and cargo are the
property of the Dutch gov
ernment, and he is negotiat
ing what he and his team
should receive as finders.
Asked how he. would feel
about a 50-50 split, he said
with a grin: “Oh, I think we
deserve more than that.”

apore, found a hoard of
tableware in 1963 when he
raised $2 million worth of
porcelain from an Asian junk.

He was evasive about the
location of his latest wreck,
saying only it is in the south
of the South China Sea and in
international waters — &
point stressed for the benefit
of any other government
which might fancy a share of
the booty.

Some of the porcelain is
being donated to museums
but the vast majority will be
auctioned in Amsterdam as
was intended when it set out
on its journey 235 years ago.

items to whole sets com
prising up to 370 pieces,
Christie's auctioneers said.

Written test proposed

owners are required to take a
test before being granted a
municipal permit to drive a
