Hydro and the Department Highways are upgrading the traffic light sytem at H. L. Keenleyside Dam. The new system is designed to handle traffic more efficiently and reduce waiting time. Relocation of the north light will restrict the most active areas of the dam to single lane traffic and therefore increase safety on the dam for maintenance crews, site visitors and the motoring public. The updated system will be a “demand” type system as opposed to the existing “timed” system. In a “demand” system vehicles are detectéd as they approach the stop area to initiate the traffic light sequence on a first come first serve basis. This will greatly reduce the waiting time when traffic is light since the system will respond immediately. to handle vehicles entering from one end only. The north traffic light will be relocated from the Control Building area to North Park. The south traffic light is not being relocated but the “stop line” is being moved from the concrete deck to the asphalt road surface. These changes to the Keenleyside Dam traffic control system are expected 0: , - reduce waiting time and the tendency for vehicles to speed across the dam in order to “beat the lights” - eliminate the congestion at the Control Building area - improve visibility at the south stop area - increase safety for site visitors and maintenance crews For vehicles that.are leaving the main parking lot, the traffic signals can be initiated by a “push button” located adjacent to the south traffic light post when there is no regular traffic to activate the system.
