CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, June 17, 1976 The Scene at... KINNAIRD JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL ‘The nicest thing happened last Friday! Mr. Harry Bate, principal of Kinnaird Elemen- tary, made a special trip to KJ. to deliver a huge “thank you” note from'Grade 2 pupils of his ' school. (He was caught red- handed tacking it to one of our shall bulletin boards!) The “note"—on a large ‘poster sheet—was addressed to :the members of “The Little Bit of Nothing Circus” and was simply delightful. Here are a few excerpts: @ "Iliked the gorilla” (Leo) e “Danny, you were a good ““Tingmaster” (Steven) @ “I liked when the gorilla was chasing the animals.” (Bon- nie} e "I liked when Santa's toys lifted up their skirts.” ,:(Laurie-Ann) @ “Lliked the whole thing,” : (Mark) * This last sentiment was “echoed heartily by all the Grade 's! ri Thank you, one and all, for } taking the trouble to write! Our students got a big kick out of + that letter. : Everybody crowded a- jround to read it, and we are rtainly going to keep it up intil after our band concert, so at others may share it, too. * . And now, it’s our turn to iPyramus and Thisbe. ae In the original version, the two young lovers, cruelly kept yapart by their families, con- verse through a chink in the ithe woods under a mulberry ictree. Thisbe arrives first, be- comes terrified by the roar of a ness, drops her veil, and flees. The lioness, her jaws (reddened by the blood of an ox, “tugs at the veil, then departs. Pyramus arrives at the scene, sees the blood-stained veil, assumes Thisbe has been de- voured and kills himself. When Thisbe returns and discovers his dead body, she likewise puts an end to her life. Cyril Maloff “hammed” up this grisly tale with gusto. )He was a great favorite with the audience right from the start.) This was the beginning of the production, and the stu- dents having accepted the fact Nutrition Buyline Canning for Question: My husband was recently diagnosed as having diabetes, I have always canned my own fruit and would like to continue this year. Mr. Salekin took the stu- dents who were more familiar with the language and Mr. Medvedoff took the beginners. It has been a highly successful * venture! The teachers point out that Russian is the native or second language of many people who live in the Kootenay and Grand Forks areas. Fifty of our students signed up for the course. The beginners started by learning the Russian alphabet (33 letters) and simple words and phrases. After much hard work they are now able to read short stories and poems. They can also write phrases and short sentences, “conjugate” verbs, and “decline” nouns. We think you might be interested in certain aspects of - this language: ¢ For instance, in Russian there is no definite and no inde inite article (“the", “a”, or in"), © There are three genders of nouns, the genders being determined by the noun end- ings. e Noun modifiers have the same endings as the nouns they modify, © The present tense of the verb “to be” is usually not expressed in Russian. ‘e The “cases” * follow‘ the ~ Latin (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative) but, then move to “instrumental” and “prepositional.” ; . . It is a highly interesting language. ¥ . ¢ « Now, from Russian to English! Our big reading com- petition (the Watermelon Spe- cial) is rapidly nearing its end, ‘The two leading teams are: Mr. Roulstone with Toni Wabisca and Mr. Sang with Wally Gorkoff. a Diabetic Question: I am a member of my school's track team.
