Kinnaird Middle School. She came
to Castlegar from Bonnyville,
Alberta. For grades one-12, she
was enrolled in the Francophone
Program. From the University of
Alberta in Edmonton, Hamel
received her B.A. and B. Ed.

Hamel feels fulfilled as a teacher.

inchude cross-country skiing, swim-
ming and learning Spanish.

Dear Ann Landers:
Which is more important to
Americans, sports or reli-
gion? I'll bet nine out of 10
people would say sports.
Well, they would be wrong.

The late Associated
Press writer, George Cor-
nell, whose beat was reli-
gion, did some research in
1992 and found that $56.7
billion was contributed by
Americans to religious
groups, That is 14 times
more than the $4 billion
Spent that year on profes-
sional baseball, football
and basketball combined.
According to the Gallup
PoH, attendance at reli-
gious functions totaled 5.6
billion in 1993, That is
about 55 times greater
than the 103 million
Americans who attended
professional football,
baseball and basketball
games that year.

In 1990, the overall
attendance at U.S. sport-
ing events was estimated
at 388 million. This
includes both professional
and college football, base-
ball, hockey, basketball,
boxing, tennis, soccer,
wrestling and harness,
auto and dog racing. In
comparison, the religious
attendance in 1990 was
estimated at 5.2 billion —
more than 13 times the
