(Health & Welfare Canada} Lotter to the Editor Dear Sir: To put it bluntly, I was disgusted with the conduct of many fans at the Castlegar vs, Spokane Juniors game Satur- day night. This game was an example of barbarianism in this modern age. Even though I was not watching the game itself, I was working very close to it, and I received much first-hand, relia- ble information during and after the game. From what many fans (Castlegar fans, of course) said, Spokane fans were to blame for all incidents occurring in the bleachers. However, I think, and many agree, that both sides were equally to blame. There were numerous reports of in- nocent bystanders being severely jostled,- besides the many fist fights and insults thrown back and forth, I cannot fairly say who started these incidents but it was obviously a case of each side provoking the other. The ‘children’, however, must also be held to blame for their taunting and jeering helped just as much to provoke fights, Especially near the end of the game, the fans were simply out of control and it was a state of mayhem. These incidents help show that hockey, in some * ways, is becoming a barbaric sport: the fans, as was demon- strated on Saturday, wanted, or at least seemed to want violence. T'm not saying that all fans were in a vicious mood—luckily there are those who come to hockey games to see a good, fast, exciting and non-violent game; but anyone could see that violence in the stands was not confined to one small group. If fans really want a repeat. of Saturday night's commotion, it certainly doesn't say much for their values, but for those of us who wish to see the con- tinuation of good Junior Hockey, I hope that the situa- tion will improve. As of the time of writing, Cecil Bradford and his rink of Rolf Jacobson, Ross Oborne and Pete Soberlak are leading the parade, having only dropped one point, a tie with Curt Waterman last Tuesday morn- ing. + We. played Cecil on Wednesday and had a real cliff- hanger that went to the last rock, before a decision was reached. One up but with four shots laying against him, Cec, | with his last rock, played a real McDonald Brier shot to count ‘one and the game. From our point of view, Cec is well worth his place in the standings and, in Ross Oborne, could well have the beat second in the club. Rolf Jacobson, too, is playing a bang-up game these days and Cec, always manages to come through in the clutch, Last week's results were as follows: Nov. 80—Mills over Young, Wadey over LeRoy, Bradford tied Waterman and Dalziel tied ‘Murphy.
