There School Read-a Thon Produces Bookworms A pilot program at Castle- gar Primary and Twin Rivers schools to promote reading and to help in the fight to bring Multiple Sclerosis under con- trol has been a resounding “success. During the five weeks the read-a-thon program was un- derway, over’50 per cent of the students participated. The stu- dents read a total of 1,170 books. and raised $1,228.18’ for the Multiple- Sclerosis Society of Canada. Each participating student gathered sponsors who agreed to pledge a’ certain amount of money for each~ book ‘the student read during the lifé of the program, The child's par- ents were asked to sign a card verifying that each book was . actually read. Principal Mike Lauriente, said ‘the students were en- couraged to read books either at, or slightly above, their own reading level. The students responded to the challenge with . an enthusiasm which put a strain on the school’s library facilities. “All participants. will re- ceive a citation from the society.
