However, a bankruptcy court judge has approved preliminary agreements in a rival effort to take control of Continental by Houstona-based Maxxam Inc. The agreements give Air Canada 10 days to get more information from Continental. * REDUCED SPENDING Canadian business spending on new construction, machinery and equipment will drop 3.1 per cent in 1992, a sign of continued weak confidence in the economy, a Statistics Canada report released Wednesday indicates. The business sector expects capital spending of $72.9 billion, a decrease of 3.1 per cent over 1991. MONEY IN THE BANK Citicorp had a huge increase in second-quarter earnings on a sharp cut in expenses and a rise revenues, the No. 1 U.S. banking company said Tuesday. The company said it earned $171 million US in the April-June quarter. In the same period a year ago, Citicorp earned $11 million. WorkPLACE Energizing the Xoolenays West Kootenav Power is headed underground to play it PowerSmart Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER Who knows what lurks beneath the surface of the earth? The folks at West Kootenay Power do, and they are trying their best to let it out. It’s called geothermal energy, power that is literally trapped under the ground. It’s pollution-free, available year-round, and tapping into it can save our non-renewable resources — all of which makes sense to WKP. That’s why the utility has enlisted the assistance of Kootenay Geo-thermal Energy Systems and WaterFurnace International, to install the most energy-efficient household heating and cooling system known to man. “It’s called the earth-coupled, closed-loop heat exchanger,” said WKP communications officer Donna Bertrand of the new PowerSmart program. The heat exchanger uses a series of antifreeze-filled underground pipes to harness energy. “It was designed to bring energy consumption down. The principle is that the less energy people use, the less supply we have to go out and get.” Which not only means good news for environmentalist who would like to see the use of non- renewable resources limited, but it’s also good news for energy consumers. “Once this system is up and running we’ll study it and confirm what we believe will be a 50 per cent savings in energy consumption,” Bertrand said. That means that for every one dollar spent on electrical home heating, cooling and hot water, one dollar will be saved. That was a good enough reason for Walter and Olga Gorkoff. “I saw this at the Trade Fair and I thought it might be the way to go,” said Gorkoff, who is building a new home in Ootischenia. “I want to pay as little as possible and now I expect a savings on my power bill.” But WKP Energy Management Engineer Lorne Trickey admits that the installation cost of “approximately $10,000 per home” will get a charge out of some people. ° “It’s obvious we need a rebate to make this attractive,” Trickey said. So WKP has made an application to the B.C. Utilities Commission — the government board which oversees the activities of power companies — so that WEP will be able to offer a $3,500 rebate to people like the Gorkoffs. And according to Gorkoff, that puts the heating and codling system in the same price range as a gas system. “What we're doing makes sense,” Trickey said. “People are saving money in the form of lower rates and it’s good for the environment.” And since when has a power company given a zap about energy conservation or the environment? Ever since WKP and 13 other companies adapted B.C. Hydro’s PowerSmart system . and promoted programs to improve lighting efficiency, refrigeration efficiency, motor energy efficiency and so on. “Energy conservation is in our best interest,” Trickey said. “It’s in everybody’s best interest.” 7 % Kootenay Energy Systems’ Mickey Kwasnicki lays pipe which will trap energy contained under the earth. News photo by Glen Freeman I swore I’d never follow the masses and do a Top 10 list. Here’s my Top Three: ‘Top Three Questions Asked at the Castlegar Travel Info Centre.’ 3. “What’s there to do in Castlegar?” 2. “Where’s the bathroom?” 1. “How do you get out of Castlegar?” I guess our tourist attractions don’t actually slap you in the face when you drive in. At any rate, the Info Centre is doing reqord business this year. Visitor traffic for each month of 1992 has easily topped the numbers from last year. Of European travellers, Germans seem the most numerous. There’s also been quite a few from Sweden and the Netherlands. We seem to be drawing our fair share of Americans as well — cross-border shopping, no doubt. eee Wait for it. You remember that piece of property at 13th Avenue and 3rd Street? That’s the intersection where the City wants to widen the road, but the snag is that CP Rail owns the property. CP spokesperson Steve Morris says the company is waiting to hear back from its railway division to establish whether or not they need the property. The City of Castlegar hopes |‘Pardon us Castlegar, but where’s the bathroom?’ emma ae a se The Bottom Line NeiIRACHYNSKI the relatively small parcel of land will be given to them. Morris says, “(CP’s) general policy is if (its lands) are surplus they are sold.” The price tag depends on the assessed value of the property. Still, the city is keeping its fingers crossed for a freebie. A Subway is officially going through in Castlegar. The lease for the restaurant franchist ‘was signed Monday and the new shop will be going up where Diamond Video used to be in the Castleaird Plaza. Expect the shop to be up and running by the end of August. Owner-operator Leona Rizzotti says the store has generated a lot of interest. “If we get as much business as we have excitement we'll be flying,” Rizzotti said. Her and husband John have just celebrated their 10th Anniversary. I guess restaurants have replaced tin as traditional 10- year anniversary gifts.
