food prices. in September
were unchanged from Aug-
ust, as lower prices for fresh
fruit and vegetables and.
beverages offset higher
meat, poultry, egg and ba-
kery prices, says a‘ survey
released by Agriculture Can-
ada.

basket of food items in 12
major cities, was 104.4 last
month compared with a base

The department says a

week, down 53 cents from

99 items instead of 64, shows
the retail beef price index
rose 2.8 per cent from Aug-
ust. But stable conditions for
beef will result in little price
change this month.

Pork prices were up 5.5
per cent in September from
August.. However, with
about 10 per cent more hogs
going to market than a year
earlier, a drop in pork prices
is likely this fall.

tionnaire resulted in approx-
imately 1,000 answers. All
the“elementary ‘schools’ and

well in the survey. Many of
the returns from younger
people requested comics and
more sports books. The main
finding from a. general ap-
praisal of the questionnaire
returns is that library non-
users are more sports-ori-
ented than the users; non-
users were generally un-
aware of the library's ser-
viees; one-quarter of the
users stated that they made
use of the library's free
