They are now being marketed aggressively by several of the country’s major A spokesman for Merrill Lypch Canada said his firm has been selling T-bills to people who have never chore invested and in the last few months sales have 3 picked “dramatically” because of uncertainty & sorsunding the direction of interest rates. AUCTION HELD T-bills are the federal government's way of raising day-to-day money. Every week, the Department of Finance reviews its anticipated needs plus existing bond & and T-bill issues that are about to come due, then notifies the financial community what it needs. An auction is held every Thursday, with major investment dealers and chartered banks bidding for allotments for their own accounts and for resale to clients. T-bills sell at a discount and mature at par or face value so the highest bidder — providing the best price for the government — wins the largest amount. Although some brokers and chartered banks sell denominations as low as $1,000, many advise that amounts 6f less than $5,000 are difficult to buy and sell. The bulk of bills trade in allotments of at least $100,000, with terms ranging from 30 days to one year. Brokers and banks will calculate what rate of interest you can earn by tallying the difference between the discount price and face value. RATE HIGHER The rate often is substantially higher than that offered on a term deposit. For example, Merrill Lynch offers 30-day T-bills for a yield of 11.9 per cent, 60-day at 12 per cent and 90-day at 12.15 per cent. Meanwhile, the major chartered banks are paying interest of 10 per cent on 30-day and 90-day term deposits and 10.5 per cent for a year. Savings account rates are lower although most of the major banks offer special accounts that boast higher interest payments. Term deposits also lock in your money for a set time while the liquidity of T-bills gives the holder the option of selling them for a smaller gain if cash is needed immediately. declining world markets and thrown out of work. “The closure of the Georgia-Pacific mill Mill workers CLOSES MILL But in 1981, Georgia-Pacifie shut down the mill citing t, 270 men. were MEN’S SUMMER — BALL GLOVES federal government's Industrty Labor Assistance But the last of the grants supplied under the plan has just run out and Annis says that unless more industries locate in McAdam, people will start to leave. More wood on the market is going to make the problem worse.” But Danny MacDonald, chairman of a 10-member committee proposing to re. open the plant, dismissed Jones's concerns. He said the mill has nine written orders for plywood and more where those came from “Right now we have the orders to start up the plant. I know there's a market out there. We'll have no problem getting rid of our wood.” He said he was commit ments from AFA Products in Cloverdale, B.C., and Nor land Forest Products in Rich mond for a minimum of 30 boxcar loads of the plywood per month and a possible 60 loads. The ailing plywood -in dustry, which was once able to command premium prices for its Douglas fir product, now is suffering from high manufacturing costs and an onslaught of cheaper substi tutes on the market, such as waferboard made from wood chips. MacDonald said the Vic toria plant will make pro gress against the financial problems if its request for decertifiction from the Inter national Woodworkers of America is approved and minimum wages can get cut from $13.48 to about $10 hourly “I sure would prefer to remain in a union, but the costs are just too high. We have to take a wage cut to get the thing on the road.” The union has not yet opposed the decertifieation move. The committee has reques- ted meetings with the federal and provincial governments to see $5.5 million in funding to aequire the mill and begin production. MacDonald siad the plant will open within a week of funding approval from the governments, employing four to five people immediately He said that when work on a faulty boiler is completed expected to take about a month — the plant will employ 130 for the following four to six months, and 178 after that —-SKI WEAR 50% Off 148 SWANS — ALPINA Stretch Pants Fa SPECIALS Selected Skates — SUPER TACKS —JOFA Regular to $239 $990 Hockey Gloves HG-38 44* * Sticks * —JOFA —C.C.M -VICTORIAVILLE $988 NO LIMIT CHECK OUR PRE-SEASON SKI SPECIALS!
