The water drawn from the Hugh Keenleyside Dam was substantially decreased from Monday to Thursday to carry out a dam inspection. The resulting low levels on the Columbia River down- stream from the dam caused some interference with Pope and Talbot’s operations. From Monday to Wednes- day the water coming out of the dam ranged from 20,000 cubic feet per second down to as low as 5,000 cfs. On Thursday, the water tap was shut off completely for five hours. “(Thursday) has been tough,” P & T’s resident man- ager Bob Coutts said. “We’ve had a fair bit of down time because of the shortage of logs,” he said. “Our elevators don’t go low enough to get the logs on the land. “We have no real inconve- niences unless the water level (from the dam) goes below 10,000 (cubic feet per second),” Coutts said. Gary Birch, B.C. Hydro’s senior environmental co-ordi- nator, says Hugh Keenleyside must be examined every six ears, Birch said the dam is about a year-and-a-half behind on its safety inspection. “There was one planned for for spring of 1991, but that was halted because (the Min- istry of the Environment) said it must be co-ordinated with the Celgar expansion.” Coutts gave B.C. Hydro credit for making an effort to keep P& T in touch with what was going on. “B.C. Hydro has main- tained a very close dialogue with us, ” Coutts said. “I expect they’ve done as well as they could,” he added.
