RRA LE TCC EEY Potted Hibiscus in Bloom Can Add Color to Brighten Any Home & Pulpit = Pew |P By Pastor Donald W. Reed 4 Week, mind you; © ; though I'm sure 4 the organizers did not exclude sacred music, . ‘The life of God in the soul inevitably results in song, It is as natural for the pardoned soul to hymn God's praises as it is for the lark to sing. One of our Gospel songs begins, “I feel like singing all the time.” Another expresses a similar emotion, “There's with- St. Joseph's CWL in my heart a melody." The latter refrain goes like this: » Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweet- est name I know; Fills my every longing, keeps me sing- ing as I go. Such singing is essentially Christian, It had its foregleam in the Old Testament Psalms; the early church made melody sin their hearts but its music was lost during the dark ages, till the Reformation brought it’ once again to life. Since then every great Christian move- ment had been marked by a fresh outburst of song. Donated in Memory Of Father E. A. Brophy The November meeting of Saint Joseph's Council, Catholic Women's League was called to order by president Mrs. J. Kaufman. Minutes of the last, meeting were read by the secretary. A directive from the organization and development convener was read by Mrs. D. Calder. Treasurer Mrs. E. Muller’ gave a financial report which was approved by the member- ship. The president reported that a clock, in memory of Father Brophy, was presented the Senior Citizens on the opening of the new Rota Villa. A letter of thanks is to be sent to B&W Engraving for their donation of the beautiful en- graving they did on the clock plaque. Mrs. P. Haley reported that the church and christian family life conveners had done hospital visiting and had lit candles ‘on all ‘Catholic graves on All Souls Day. She also reported that Right To Life memberships were now avail- abJe and that Christmas cards would be sold to raise funds for the group. ‘The annual family Christ- mas party for members and their families would be looked after by Mra. A. Matt, J. Bozek and F. Grifone. . Motions catried at the meeting were: donation of $600 to the church for use of the parish; one per cent of bazar profit to be given to the peace and development fund; $16 of the spiritual fund to be used to purchase a wreath for the Remembrance Day service; ‘Mrs. P. Haley to be given $25 for supplies for the church and christian family life convener- ship. ‘The catering job on Nov. § was reported a great success, as was the annual bazaar as reported by Mrs. J. Schaivon. ‘Thank you notes were sent to. Mrs. Casteneda for her donation to the spiritual life convenorship and to McLeods Store for their help with the bazaar. The meeting closed with a very interesting and informative talk given by Mr. Axel Nielsen on stamp collect- ing, along with a display of his stamps. The talk and coffee - were enjoyed by all the mem- bers present, The Puritans set the — Psalms to metre and melody; the Moravians and Pietists left a legacy of song in the German tongue; the great work that Isaac Watts commenced in “England served well to intro- duce his native land to popular hymnody in readiness for the wealth of Christian singing that was to mark the work of John and Charles Wesley. Add to all this the con- tributions of hundreds of saints and today the English speaking world possesses an inexhausti- ble. treasury’ of hymns rich in Scriptural truth, literary merit and musical skill. Strange then that so much of this sacred wealth is being abandoned for trifling trinkets of the hour. In so many circles today, the ministry of: sacred song has been shamefully de- graded as the praises of God are dragged down to the level of pantomime. But perhaps the pendulum is swinging. Many among our youth have reacted to such Gospel froth and theological jazz and, taking the familiar words of the Bible, have set them to simple, worship melo- dies. spiritual songs—what would the church do without them? From the simple, “Jesus Loves Me" to the majestic, “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name", the strains of. song will ever characterize the people of God. .As on earth, ‘so also in heaven, the “rush of alleluias” and the “ringing of a thousand harps” will echo and reecho our praises to the Lamb who was. slain. Frances Havergal, that prolific writer of sacred lyrics, gave us this prayer, “Take My Voice and Let Me Sing Always, Only for My King.” This Sunday, as you wor- ship through singing, let it be with the spirit and with the understanding The Lord seeketh such to worship Him. ! church directory | ST.
