CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, July 24, 1975 * Five Day Plan to Stop Smoking. Average Pack-a-day Smoker Lives 5} Years Less than the Person Who Doesn't Smoke “Did you.realize that the average cigarette smoker will lose five ‘weeks of life for cach year smoked?” This question was posed here this week by Pastor John Blake, regional director of the internationally famous “Five Day Plan to Stop Smoking”. Pastor Blake explained that the American Cancer Society has calculated that if ‘one reaches the age of 25 and {s ‘an average pack-a-day smoker, Official Word Can Help Kids Keep Dental Health How do you get youngsters lo keep to good oral hygiene practices? They usually have more “urgent” matters in mind. You ean keep talking to them about it, reminding them to brush their teeth and so on, but il’s like talking to a brick wall sometimes. Thal’s why the can't just be told not to indulge themselves so much, But if they could read it for themselves in “official” pamphlets, the next time they are likely to pay more attention to the warnings of thelr parents, Using fluoride toothpastes, or knowing what a fluoridated he will only live to the age of 68 whereas the same man, were he 8 non-amoker, would live to the age of 73—a 6%: year differ- ence. ‘The average two-pack-a- -day man would lose even more time, dying only threo, months after retirement at 65, ‘The cost of smoking is very high in dollars and cents, too, Rev. Blake has calculated that if'a smoker were to spend Téca day each day fora year it would come to $273.75 in one year or $14,782,560 in 54 years of smoking. A phenomenal figure arises, though, when one calcu- lates what a regular $279.75 would come to if deposited yearly at an annua! interest rate of 9 per cent. At age Canadian Dental A writes articles like this one, or publishes pamphlets. Other health organiza- tons, private or government, also publish informative litera- ture, most of which can be picked up free at your dentist's office. 3 The CDA writes its pam- phlets to attract youngsters ‘and make an impression on them, without the preaching that usually accompanies the urging of such preventive den- tal measures, ¥ Candy eaters, for example, ipply can do for teeth, are detailed in the brochures in an interesting ys : All the facts are boiled down into quick-reading pam- phlets and many popular myths are dispelled, Next time you visit your dentist, remember the pam- phlets are free, they can save a Tot of pain and expense, so why not pick up some for your children—and yourself. Pastor Blake claims that it is very worthwhile to stop smoking—even for one who has smoked for many years. Almost immediately the one who quits will begin to lower his chances + of risk from heart attack. Immediately his lungs will begin the process of trying to clear out the mess that the cigarette tar has ca Rev. Blake says that though long term damage can- not be significantly repaired, the rate of decline will almost immediately improve. Thus the chances of getting lung cancer decrease each year after quit- ting until after ten years they are comparatively much more like the chances of those who have never smoked. “After quitting one even smells better,” the minister adds. He says that one’s chances of getting ulcers and even other forms of cancer will lessen. The “Five Day Plan to Stop Smoking” is to be. con- ducted from July 27 to 31 in the conference room of the Castle- gar and District Hospital. Ja this program Pastor Blake will be working with Dr. Duane Brueske of the Trail Hospital Pulmonary Function Lab. :Rev. Blake says the pro- gram is a non-sectarian public service sponsored by the Seventh. Day Adventist Church. Rev. ‘Blake explains that the doctor-minister team works together to present the physi- cal and psychological problems related to smoking and its discontinuance. ‘They use lec- tures, group therapy, movies and diseussion to help people over this problem: The “Five Day Plan to Stop Smoking” is the most widely used plan in the world and is being used in over 100 countries. ‘There is to be no charge for the program or the booklet. will be given, the MEN‘S GOLF SETS (7 piece) 4 only left Clearing af 20% off Reduced fo Clear ALL CHILDREN’S SUMMER WEAR Inet night to make a donation toward expenses if the particl. pants wish and feel that the, program has helped them.
