BIRKS, Imperial Block, land have been buying their ‘tupplies for their mines in that locality, ‘at Trpit. | Bodsland Before the business men of attempt tu build a wagon' road’ to the Boundary country, they had “better se- care’ the 'trade''of ‘their own™ people by building roads and trails to the ‘lines adjacent to-this city. The folly of even discussing the road to the Boundary country: should be ap parent. . In the first place a good wagon road would cost at least $2,000 a mile, and thirty miles of new road: would ve necessary. It would not: be. finished very long before a rawroad would be’ built into that section. Even if it was built there would be little or ne trade +come to Rossland, because the’ people over there could buy cheaper: elsewhere. There are enough realities for Rossland , to Spend her time upon without chasing shadows. « The announcement that the 0. P. R. would build into Rossland independent of the Columbia & Western, was re- ceived with both regret. and joy. Re- gret that it means trouble for Mr. Heinze, who has shown great enterprise by building » smelter and railroad, which has done much to develope this section of the Kootenay... The fact that the C. P. R. will irnmediately build into Rossland can but be gratifying. Al- though it can be but an uneven fight between a great corporation like the C. bp. R. and a single man enterprise, it can but result in @ great benefit to land. Ont of i grows the benctfits to the business interests of any town, and this must come whilé ditferent roade are opening-into Ross- land. _ Alderman Johnson madé a valuable suggestion at the last council meeting which was, that the city proceed to claim the water in the streame near Roseland for domestic use. “It 'was agreed thattthe city counciior should be coneulted as to the proper méthod to proceed to secure these waier right. It is useless to write and ask ifany particular business would pay here. é Everybody must be his own judge ina take his own chances, While there is not-work tor all who iaquire, most sober, ~indus- tiious persons. who really wish to work have so far been able to obtain it. = We would not advise any man to land here “broke” without friends, although many who have done so are doing well. This camp is now setthng down on a business basis. The,, Sars is engaged not in working the mines and conducting the busi- ness of the town, but are buyinj or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying and selling real estate; building~‘touses for “rental purposes, prospecting and retaking prospectors. Many are here simply looking’on in won- derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of a pay roll but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested. The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabulous riches are scarcely excelled by the imaginary «King Solomon’s Mines,” We will not attempt to discuss the mines in a single ar- ticle, as we have been writing about them for nearly three years and have not been able to keep up with them. Tbe ore ship- ‘ments speak for themselves. ‘The town has won an enviable reputation for law and order, It is supplied with waterworks and electric lights. ‘The main street fs graded and ten blocks are buflt up with two and three story busi- nesshouses.
