C4 casticcar NEWS, Thursday, April 5, 1979 Nora’s night of horror E get away with murder is no easy task, but it does happen. The most successful murder of all, at least from the perpetrator’s point of view, Is a death which is never detected as murder. The untimely demise Is attributed to an accident or natural causes and is never really investi- gated, Then there is the alternate category, where the act of murder is obvious, but every investigative avenue leads to a dead end and the murderer goes scot free, Nora Fuller was an unlikely victim. In 1902 she was a Jeenager looking for a job, preferably in the entertain- ment industry. She had performed on the stage in-high school, and just naturally applied for any job openings involving the theatre. Work wasn't easy to come by. After some weeks she decided to take a stop-gap job. That's jow she came to answer an‘ advertisement in a San Francisco newspaper: ‘Young girl to take care of baby; good home and gcod wages; Box 120-Chronicle.” The very next day Nora received a postcard: ‘Miss Fuller, In answer to yours in response to my advt., kindly call at the Popular Restaurant, 55 Geary St., and inquire for Mr. John Bennett at 1 o'clock. If you can't come at 1, come at 6. J.B.” Rushed to date with death. Nora had to rush to get to the restaurant by 6. She er and Oung her to his table. After waiting a half hour he left the restaurant and was seen pacing up and down outside the front door. Krone was later to state that the man in question had often eaten in his establishment. He was about forty years old, five feet eight, and weighed about 1 junds. He had a brown moustache, and was always well dressed, When Nora failed to return that night,.her mother reported her missing to the police. After a complete investigation they assumed that Nora had kept her appointment with Mr. John Bennett, but from there it appeared as if Nora had fallen off the edge of the earth, John Bennett didn’t exist. The address at 1500 Geary Street was a vacant lot. With no new clues coming in, the investigation wound down. On February 8, almost a month after Nora ran out of her house eating an apple, a real estate representative, whose job it was to inspect houses before renting them to new tenants, went to scrutinize a-house at 2211 Sutter Street. The house had been rented for one month. The to have been occupied by the previous tenant. He opened the door to a tiny back room. Inside, lyi ng bed, was the nude, mutilated body of a young girl. The real estate agent ran from the vacant house directly to the fet policeman he could find. The dead girl was Nora er. ° : Pe eet et - The inve ane The investigating ‘detectives’ learned of, the efforts which had been made to trace the missing girl, and how that investigation had bogged down. They learned that two days before the advertisement appeared in the Chronicle, a Mr. C.D. Hawkins had leased the house on Sutter Street from the real estate firm of Umbsen and mpany. When questioned about references, Hawkins back roo: Fuller was to occupy it. r 3 The vacant house and the murder room were examined without concrete results. The only room which had been used was the little back room where the body was found. - Everything in the room had been recently purchased by the killer. Attempts to trace the. murderer proved frus- . on he - the fireplace. It became obvious that the killer had placed the ad, leased the house, and bought'the furniture; all for one night’s use. Finally got a break . Aftera frustrating inv »stigation, the police got a break, A clerk, Charles B. Hadley, disappeared, His employer reported that Hadley nad been fixing the books and was F _ we 6s “é ae tad 2 several thousand dollars short. Hadley’s girlfriend, Ollie Blasier, told the police that her boyfriend had flown the coop immediately after Nora Fuller's disappearance. One day he just walked out on her. Another interesting bit. of information was that Charlie habitually wore a false he. He fit the of Br tt-Hawkii Disappeared forever When the killer, using the name Hawkins, leased the house on Sutter Street, it was necessary for him to sign a document. Ollie Blazier came up with Hadley’s signature on a photograph he had given her. The two signatures’ were compared. They were both written by the same man, Hadley had worked for fourteen years at the same job. In recent years he had lived with Miss Blasier. Even she was amazed to find out how little she knew about him. i ible to trace one You're Looking} ‘Good With ataeteaer Pre hieeie : EXCAVATION — HAULING ~ BACKH Es CONCRETE GRAVEL — PIT RUN GRAVEL TOPSOIL — 7/8 CRUSHED ROAD GRAVEL, .
