The rapidly approaching
Quebec referendum and all
that it implies calls to mind
another amall incident which
occurred ‘during the Italian
Campaign of the Second

1948-44, following the bloody
battle“ of* Ortona in which
casualties. were extremely
heavy,on both sides, the
rapid allied advance north-
ward slowed to a static, ex-
tended-front type of warfare,
usually along the high banks
of rivers, with a wide ‘no-
man's-land’ in the valley be-
tween. Here patrols probed
constantly, seeking to harass
the enemy and obtain infor-
mation.

It was nerve-wrecking
work, and clashes between
patrols, mines, booby-traps
and counter bombardments
produced a steady trickle of
casualties back to the rear.
As a consequence, the Sea-
forth Highlanders found
themselves being shifted fre-
quently to different positions
to relieve other units in the
brigade, while attempting to
cover a battalion front with
an undermanned battalion.
The line at tithes was pretty
thin, ? :

platoon was occupying a vil-
lage which hung on the edge
ofa ravine. I've forgotten its
name, for over the years one

famous Quebec unit ‘The
Royal Twenty-Second Regi-
ment,’ better known as the
“Van Doos.”

One late, dark night
when I was just finishing
inspecting my positions and
passing close to Jock’s area, I
glanced at the luminous dial
of my watch — “Just about
one o'clock — not much
chance of visitors now.”

As if on signal, the night
exploded — rifles and ma-
chine-guns snarled and spat,
‘grenades exploded with
heavy thuds, tongues of
flame flickered across Jock's
front, while bullets cracked
over my head or howled off
the walls of the village
houses,

“Surprise attack,” I
thought. “He'll need flanking
fire.” But, just as I was
turning to give the necessary
orders, a pistol flare arched
into the sky and I heard a
