MARRIAGE COUNSELLING Couples going earlier TORONTO (CP) — Alarmed by a skyrocketing divorce rate, couples are seeking help earlier in marriage than ever before, two Toronto counsellors say. “There is probably the same kind of human breakdown that has always happened, but now a lot of people see that as a problem,” says William Sparling, a United Church minister and executive director of the Toronto Institute of Human Relations. “They don’t just live with it as in the old days.” Ann Bartram, a fellow minister and director of training at the institute, said modern couples “have higher standards of what marriage is to be about. “They want something more than their parents had and that leads them to counselling — ‘We want more. We don't want to end up the way they did.’ ” Both Sparling and Bartram say the acceptance of therapy as a modern marital aid has brought more young clients to the institute, a non-profit, church-related organ- ization that offers counselling, education and research into human relations. TREND TO THERAPY “People are coming one year after marriage, where formerly you would tend to get people who were well on the way to breakdown and were part of the inevitability in the old days,” Sparling said. “There is cultural permission to do it now.” Bartram said couples know people who have gone into counselling — their parents, their friends. “There's a lot of people around them saying ‘Go into counselling. We did it and it was good for us. Don't wait too long.” Sparling, 47, and the father of three, said problems arise when partners enter marriage with unrealistic expectations. “They still believe in magic. Then six months into the marriage they say, ‘Geez, I really thought it would be differ- ent than this.’ “It sometimes has to do with careers,” Sparling said. “You go through courtship, the falling-in-love stage, and after you get that solved then you go like hell in your job. Suddenly you go from being in love to being a spectator to somebody using all that same energy in a career. CAREER PRESSURES “There's a lot of pressure on people in their 20s and 30s to make it or break it, so there's a lot of pressure on the marriage. They're never home together. There's no time. It's not so much the dysfunction we used to come up against, it’s just that they've managed not to be together lovingly, calmly. Bartram, 44, mother of two, said, “Crisis brings people into therapy.” “By and large, it's people who say, ‘Oh my God, I can't get through another day, I hurt so bad.’ ” With divorce claiming about four out of 10 marriages, break-up is something that cannot be ignored. Both Sparling and Bartram provide mediation counselling for couples con- templating the end of their partnership. “There is still a stigma around divorce,” said Bartram. “It isn’t easy for them to accept that they're a divorced person. I can't think of a client who has said, “There's nothing to this.’ The whole idea of saying ‘I'm a divorced person’ and writing that on a form or checking that off, I see people struggling with that as their identity. Farrell, who wrote « book called The Liberated Man and is producing another entitled Why Men Are the Wa; They Are, says men have been taught to behave in tain ways to win approval. Men do make lousy listeners, he éays, but to be successful, they have learned to formulate their own speeches ind pay scant heed to those of others. “That's functional for success, because it takes the ‘boss* attentidn away from his competitor, who is talking, and puts it on himself,” says Farrell, who notes the same Ebehavior is counterproductive for men in social = situations. = A woman, on the other hand, is trained from birth to & ask questions, to hang on a man's every word “because she intuitively learns that man is drawn to her, he will tend to feel secure with her,” says the author, here to lec- = aid and lead a workshop on the dangers of rigid sexual are at the mercy of society's expectations. Men are on the verge of the same discovery, a E he says. But this will only happen when men are hit where it ; Farrell, who lives in San Diego, believes both sexes “All successful social movements have two things in common. The leaders feel an economic loss, combined with a personal emotional rejection. “The women's movement emerged only when marriage broke down as a guarantee of economic = security. When that happened, women went into the job = market and for the first time, large | numbers of them A men’s liberation movement, similar to that spear- headed by women in the early 1970s, is possible.
