passed the $11-billion mark
for the first time in 1984 for a
24-per-cent increase over the
year before and $77.4 million
deficit at the end of the year.

While a complete break-
down of Japanese figures
was not available, much of
the surge appears to be from
inereased Canadian imports
of automobiles, auto parts,
electronics and other finished
goods.

In Japan, Canadian ex-
ports of crude materials were
up 30.3 per cent to $2.62
billion and exports of fabri-
cated materials up 26 per
cent to $1.48 billion. Unclas-
sified exports were up 6.6 per
cent from $274.1 million to
$291.8 million.

Exports of food, feed, bev-
erages and tobacco remained
almost level at $1.08 billion.

TORONTO (CP) — The
Royal Bank of Canada said it
is expahding its buy-back car
loan option to include recent-
model used cars.

Under the bank's buy-back
loans, consumers can reduce
monthly carrying costs over
36 or 48 months by making

payments on a reduced prin-
cipal. The bank establishes
what the car will be worth at
the end of the loan. This is
deducted from the total fi-
nancing. At the end of the
term the consumer either
gives the car to the bank,
