Angina pectoris spray on market TORONTO (CP) — Angina pectoris, the chest pain caused by a temporary oxy- gen deficiency from stress or exertion, affects an esti- mated 1.2 million Canadians. The principal treatment of an angina attack has been a nitroglycerin tablet under the tongue, but that can be a problem — you have to grab one out of the bottle and it often takes some time for relief. Now, the federal Health and Welfare Department has approved a _ nitroglycerin spray for sale in Canada. Dr. Andrew Moriarty is medical consultant to Rorer Canada Inc., the new spray's manufacturer. He says that key advant ages to the spray are its speed and its long-term ef. fectiveness in its container — up to three years, compared to the three to six-month strength of tablets once the bottle is open. F AL Hi Vitamin C may protect liver NEW YORK (AP) — Large, daily doses of vitamin C might help stop alcohol-re- lated liver damage, says @ researcher in the United States who conducted exper- iments on guinea pigs and humans. People who drink the equivalent of about three beers a day may be helped by long-term daily intake of 500 milligrams of vitamin C, said Vincent Zannoni, professor of od tons a at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. The dosage is about eight times the recommended daily allowance. Zannoni said research found that vitamin C helped guinea pigs resist liver-fat buildup that can lead to cirrhosis. An experiment in humans also suggests the same effect might be at work, he said. He spoke in an interview after describing the research at an international confer- ence on vitamin C sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences. The research was financed by the National Institutes of Health and Hoffmann-La Roche Ine., which supplies ins to jes that alcohol in their drinking water for about three months. Afterward, the group with the vitamin-rich diet showed no fat in their liver cells, Zannoni said. Among the other group, make vitamin supplements. Dr. Mary Dufour, acting chief of the epidemiology branch of the National Insti tute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, said she was not familiar with any studies relating vitamin C to alcohol Most people can tolerate some fat in their livers with out problem, and the buildup is reversible, she said. Scien tists don’t know what makes some people go on to get cir rhosis, she said. Zannoni reported on stud. ies of about two dozen guinea pigs, divided into one group on a diet low in vitamin C, and one on a diet supple mented with the vitamin. Both groups were given three-quarters showed fat deposits, and in half, some liver cells had already died. A second experiment in- volved 20 men, ages 21 to 28. Each participated twice in Pig racing a hit HALIFAX (CP — With the familiar call to the post, the racers are guided into the gates and set to circle the track in search of the Oreo cookie that awaits in a trough at the finish line. This is pig racing at its finest, and it’s the greatest thing to hit Nova Scotia since ladies’ mudwrestling, says the announcer at this year's Atlantic Winter Fair. And the fans who have flocked to the fair to see the races seem to agree. Hundreds have gone hog- wild, surrounding Pork Chop Downs eight rows deep in spots to cheer on their favorite swine. Pigs are a lot smarter than other animals, says Jenny Coombes, who has been racing the animals at agriculture exhibitions around the province. She says pigs know what they can get away with. ‘TH NOV. 14 Block Heater a two-week exper one time taking 5,000 milligrams of vitamin C a day, and one time taking a daily placebo. At the end of the two weeks, a participant drank the equivalent of about six beers over about three hours, Zannoni said. Blood tests after the alco- hol intake showed each gen- erally had higher levels of blood fats after taking the vitamin C than after taking the placebo, Zannoni said. That suggests the fat was being removed from the liver rather than building up there, he said. FAT MEN BETTER OFF LONDON, Ont. (CP) — Fat men with high blood pressure may be better off than other men with the same problem, a university researcher says. Although obese men are more likely to develop high blood pressure, once they have it they are less likely than a thinner man with high Fried mukluks anyone? VANCOUVER (CP) — How do you prefer your mukluks stewed, fried or fricasseed? Seems staff for the North west Territories pavilion at Expo 86 had a big job answering questions from tenderfoots about the Great White North Pavilion spokesman Paul Vallillee says the staff did an admirable job helping out in quiring southerners, but there were days Like the time a customer in the pavilion’s restaurant wanted to know “How do you serve your mukluks?” — re. ferring to the northern foot wear — or the guy who in quired “Are you from the reindeer or muskox tribe?” blood pressure to have a stroke, heart attack or kid- ney failure, says Dr. Martin Bass, director of research in the department of family medicine at the University of Western Ontario. “Fat men 45 to 65 years of age who had high blood have a thin pipe you get more pressure for the same volume of water.” The study involved 34 doc- tors in the London area and 32,124 patients. About 1,500 patients had high blood pres- sure — 375 of them were men considered overweight. pressure at the inning of the study and who were followed for five years had only one-half the heart at tacks and strokes that the non-obese or lean hyper tensive men had,” Bass told a recent seminar. “Their risk is 50 per cent less.” He said it is as if fat men have a “more benign form” of hypertension. They have a greater blood volume, he said, which means it takes less pressure on the blood vessels to create hyper tension. “It's like a tap, if you dged the re- sults are at odds with current medical philosophy that ranks obesity a major health risk. But he said family doc- tors could take the findings into account when treating obese men with high blood pressure since drugs may not help them as much. “The message to physi cians is maybe they should watch those people who are overweight and have high blood pressure a little longer before they put them on medication.” INVITATION TO TENDER Transportation Service: Sealed tenders for the following transportation service will be received at the ress below un- til 15:00 on the specified closing date.
