Easy Gardens — Part 1 By HEATHER WATT ‘» There are a few people whoo major hobby is garden- 2 © ror moat people, the gar- den is a place where main- tenance is kept at a mi But, with careful planning and planting, you can have the most from your garden with the least work. There are three basic considerations: constructed areas, plant material and Iabor- as’ there are other interests which are as important. + Low maintenance {is not no maintenance. This article is not for people who hate gardening and want a way out, There are > gardens which can be left for a ‘couple of months or ones which have no chores, saving Constructed areas such as patios, walks, planters and decks can be a major part of the easy garden. These areas are expensive to construct — espe- cially if you have someone else build them — yet, in the long run, they can save many hours. The areas of the garden Bear Ann Landers: My husband and i celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary recently. Our children gave us a wonderful surprise party and sent an Invitation to President Carter and his wife, We recelved @ beautiful card of congratulations, mailed to us from the White House. It was signed ‘‘Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter.'* My question Is this: On what OTHER occasions should the President and his wife be sent an Invitation? One source stated that an Invitation should be sent to the President only for golden wedding anniversaries. Another sald the President and his wife should be Invited to all large affairs which include relatives, friends and nelghbors — otherwise they would feel slighted. My reason for asking Is ents. Constructed areas not only cover areas which otherwise would be flower beds or lawns, but they also contain planted areas eli- minating the need for edging or border plantings. In the Kootenays, most gardens have a slope of some kind and terracing and decks can often be used effectively, Instead of a high-maintenance rockery, a slope can be ter- raced into wide steps with re- taining walls anda few planting pockets, Or, a deck can be constructed out over a sloping area with several wide steps and levels and raised planters as railings. Ona tpectangular lot, patios and paths can be constructed in various shapes and angles to break up the plain Bridge Beat By JOY KEILLOR ( Bidding The count of alt the high cards in the deck totals 40 (Ace = 4, King = 9, Queen = 2, Jack = 1), You must count your hand on each deal to determine what proportion you’ hold. If you remember the Number 40, there will be many hands where you will know one of the following, 1, You and partner have enough points to make a game or slam, 2, You and partner have more than one-half the high cards in the deck and the opponents have bid too much. You can double and collect a rich penalty. 3. You know you and part- ner have not enough count for game, go you will stop at a part score, Some Refinements When a King, Queen or Jack is all alone, it loses some of its value, This is also true when a Queen or Jack is guarded with only one small card, An aceless hand is slightly overvalued and a square hand 3-3-3 of the lot, This makes it mote interesting. Also with a careful choice of screens and plants, total privacy and a’sense of living in he country can be achieved. Itis really hard to describe the many ways construction can be used. I haven't even deduct one point for any of these imperfections, Add one point for holding all aces. “i Your share of the 40 high card points in the deck is "10". This is an average hand. If you hold more than 10 it is a good hand, 26 (Game) When you and your part- ner's combined holding is eight or more, of the 18 cards in the heart suit, or the spade suit, you should make this suit the. trump suit; and if you can count at least 26 points in the com- bined hands, you should reach a Game Contract, (a bid of four hearts or four spades), You will add a Little extra for distribution when bidding suits (VOID = 8 distribution points, SINGLETON = 2 dis. tribution points, DOUBLETON = 1 distribution points, The Diamond -and Club suits are the step-children of our game of contract bridge and require a bid of five to produce game; consequently, it takes about 29 points to make a contract of Five Diamonds or Clubs, A game at No Trump (three no trump} requires 26 high card points, 13 This is the minimum on which you open the bidding by naming “one” ina trump suit. If your partner can also count Lucky 13 in his hand, he knows the combined hands contain the. magic number 26 and a game should be reached. “Distribu- tion” will play a part’ when bidding suits, All opening bids must contain two defensive tricks. Defensive Trick Table AK in one suit —2 AQ in one suit — 11% KQ in one suit —1 the many — wood, cement, brick, gravel, ete., which can.be used, It is helpful to look at magazines such as Beautiful Home and Gardens and books with lots of pictures on garden construction in your local library.
