Girls continue to fall behind boys in math TORONTO (CP) — Fe- males graduating from sec- ondary schools without math- ematics and science will be forced into low-paying jobs or unemployment, a_ harshly critical study of the Canadian education system warns. Throughout the school sys- tem, girls continue to fall behind boys in subjects such will be closed to them, the report says. “Girls, who leave school with only Grade 9 or 10 edu- cation,, bound for marriage and parenthood, will find themselves destined for menial jobs and a welfare or poverty statistic.” JOBS OBSOLETE The association's report said y school di- as 7 and physics, the Canadian School Trustees Association says in a report on sex-role plomas based on “female” courses (such as home econ- omics) will limit half of all female d to the 10 yping in And females with no back- ground in these subjects will “find technical and technolo- gical fields, where the great- est job opportunities and pay-scale increases are ex- pected in the next decade, lowest-paying female occu- pations, many of which will become obsolete in the next 10 years. To prevent this, schools should steer female students into a curriculum that will open the doors to good job opportunities, the same ones many male graduates trained in technical subjects will have access to. Teachers and guidance counsellors (male and female) are also criticized in the fed- erally funded report for sex- typing courses and careers — thereby affecting “the per- ception girls and boys have of what they should do, take and become.” The report shows that al- though both sexes show about the same attitude to mathematics in elementary school and early high school, more girls than boys drop mathematics and hard-core sciences by Grade 12. 8° Universal sure adjustment NOW onty *299 lets you sew Pressure light and heavy fabrics without pres- Carrying Case or Cabinet Extra Fabric Sale .».50% Off ONLY Singer Bulky Knitting Machines Reg. $330 ........ Handcrafted by Gordon Hill, retired driver-salesman and active woodworker, from a.slab of seasoned cedar donated by the Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society it now stands at the head of the causeway to the island. The sign took three weeks to build, but little more than an hour for the four members of the project crew — Clar- ence Verigin; ‘Shirley Rich- ards, Teresa Lauriente and Ron Lauriente — supervised by Gordon Hill, to set it in place. The project is jointly fi- nanced by a federal Summer Student Employment grant of $14,700 and the Castlegar Rotary Club which is’ spon- soring it, with John Charters as the Rotary supervisor. In the past seven weeks the crew have also cleared about °2,000 ‘metres of trail and nearly one hectare of _ land, painted signs, sprayed the poison ivy repeatedly and built a temporary low water foot-walk to the island. The paths are already becoming popular with joggers and strollers. They will treat their chosen young people to eight days of leadership training at Camp Gifford on Deer Lake 67 km north of Spokane. The expenses of the camp and travel to and from the camp are paid by the club. The camp runs from Aug. 21 and finishes Aug. 28. 5,000 more trout for Kootenay Lake 6,000 Ger- rard rainbow trout reared in a net pen in Kaslo Bay are being released in the Mea- dow Creek watershed to make their way to the Koot- enay Lake trophy, rainbow fishery. : The pen is an experimental project constructed by the Fish and Wildlife Branch to increase the production of yearling Gerrard rainbow trout for Kootenay Lake. The pen was built in a large protected bay at the north end of the Kootenay Lake to take advantage of the relatively warm lake temperatures. Last, November, fisheries technician Ronda Gates put 5,000 Gerrard rainbow fry weighing 3.5 grams into the net pen, which is surrounded by a wire “predator” cage. The fry were fed hatchery dry food from a battery RLUE Plus. each feeder. The fish gained little growth during the winter months but as the water warmed they began to feed more actively. Between April 1 and June 1 the fish doubled in weight. Last month, all the fish were nose-tagged and marked with aright maxillary clip for later identification. These fish now weigh an average of 14 grams and measure 100 mm (four in- ches) in length. Said Gates: “Based on the encouraging results from last season it is expected that 20,000 fry will be reared in the Kaslo pen this year. “They will be put into the pen in early fall which will allow growth of these fish to start sooner than last year due to the higher early fall water temperatures.” CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 6, 1983 Subjects for discussion will be motivation; understand- ing and using the media; public speaking; the family; living and dying; what it is to be a man or a woman; law and justice; Canada and the U.S. — their history, ambi- tions, their relationship; the place of business in the com- munity; how to start and how to run a small business. Rotary is an organisation of idealists. The Rotary ideal is service to one's fellow hu- man being and this theme of loving service underlies the whole of the camp. Therefore, the young peo- ple will be expected to dis- cuss ideals along with the days subject matter, and to relate ideals to their am- bitions.
