After four years of watching and waiting, Brisco is on his way back to Ottawa as Progressive Conservative MP for Kootenay West. Briseo bas won before — in 1974 and again in 1979 — but they weren't the same. In 1974 he was just another member of the Opposition. In fact, the subdued for a party that was MASSIVE TURNOUT Brisco rolls to 898-vote victory By RON NORMAN Editor Spurred on by a massive voter turnout, former Kootenay West Pro- gressive Conservative MP Bob Brisco regained bis seat Tuesday with an 898-vote victory over New Democratic Party ineymbent Lyle Kristiansen. The was expected to be close and it wa, with Brisco fytally acknow Jedging..his victory about10:20 p.m. Poll-by-poll, A2 when only a handful of the 175 polls remained to be counted. By that time he was more than 600 votes ahead of Kristiansen. Even then, Kristiansen refused to concede defeat, suggesting instead that he and the NDP may seek a recount. The final total wasn’t tallied until after 11 p.m. due to a series of vote-counting delays at the riding returning office. The final results showed Brisco with 15,888, Kristiansen with 14,990 and Liberal Jean Turnbull with 2,447. Briseo reversed his fortunes of 1980 when he lost to Kristiansen by 815 votes. Of the 40,311 eligible voters in Kootenay West, 33,325 turned out to cast their ballot — a whopping 82.7 per cent. The 1980 turnout was 71 per cent. / Both Brisco and Kristiansen in- creased their share of the popular vote at the expense of the Liberals. Brisco got 48 per cent of the vote, compared to 40 per cent in 1980 — an in- crease of 4,471. Kristiansen got an increase of 2,758 votes, or 45 per cent of the popular vote — up from 43 per cent in 1980. Turnbull and the Liberals saw their support cut by more than half from 17 per cent to just seven per cent. In 1980 Peter Kendall managed 4,769 votes. This time Turnbull, caught KRISTIANSEN SAYS in the Liberal backlash that touched every region of the country, re ceived only 2,447 votes. Castlegar voters chose Brisco by fewer than 100 votes — a trend that extended across the riding in almost every poll and accounted for the 896 vote margin. Brisco managed 1,738 votes in Castlegar, compared to 1,642 for Kris tiansea and 192 for_Typnbull. Broken down even further, north Castlegar voters chose Kristiansen by 712 votes to 568. However, voters in south Castlegar swung in Brisco'sfavor with 974 votes to 787 for Kristiansen. Other significant local polls showed Robson voters choosing Kris- tiansen with 441 votes compared to 313 for Brisco.
