Natural Hazards Research and Ap-
plications Centre at the school, told a
symposium sponsored by a consor-
tium of Colorado colleges.

“We all know that climate has
changed on this planet in the past
and it's likely to change again,”
agreed Thomas Vonder Haar, who
heads the Co-operative Institute for
Research in the Atmosphere at Col-
orado State University.

The hot, dry summer of 1988
helped attract considerable attention
to the greenhouse phenomenon. Sci-
entists believe the effect occurs when
increasing amounts of carbon dioxide
and other gases trap the heat of the
sun, warming the planet, although
they are not sure if this summer was
an example or was just unusually
hot

Response to warnings about cli-
mate change have concentrated on
legislation and international agree-
ments seeking to reduce the gases
involved, in hopes of preventing
overheating of the Earth.

exotically shaped and patterned
mineral from the sea, is no longer
only something to be made into
jewelry or placed on the coffee table
as a reminder of a holiday down
south.

Plastic surgeons have begun using
sea coral to replace bone in the face.

“Early evidence indicates that cer-
tain types of sea coral are very
similar to human bone, both in terms
of its mineral content and its porous
nature,” Dr. Harvey Rosen told a
meeting of the American Society of
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.

“T've been using it instead of grafts
of human bone, primarily in the jaws,
and it's holding up very well,” said
Rosen, chief'of plastic surgery at
Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadel-
phia.

Researchers have been trying for
years to produce synthetic bone, but
no one has been able to match the
porosity of human bone, he said.
“Because it's so difficult to duplicate
that synthetically, they turned to
nature.”

The white coral used for bone
replacement, called porous hydroxy
apatite, is found in the South Pacific.
It is heated and chemically treated to
convert calcium carbonate to ealcium
phosphate — the primary mineral
ingredient in human bone.

“The coral acts as scaffolding for
bone to grow into it,” said Rosen.

“You can put this material either
on top of bone to change the super-
ficial contour of bone or you can put it
into a bone cut and it will take up the
space once occupied by the bone and
it will stay there.

“The bone will heal to the sea coral
(and) the bone will eventually grow
into the sea coral pores.”

Unlike bones taken from another
part of the body for grafting, sea
coral “undergoes very little absorp-
tion. Over a period of time, it doesn't
melt away like human bone does.”
