It represents a unique hobby that draws classes of schoolchildren and curious tourists. “Some men buy huge boats when they retire. Others go hunting. I grow banana trees,” Joe Fernandes, a semi-retired fruit farmer said in a telephone interview. Given the cost of building and heating the greenhouse, Fernandes figures his expenses probably work out toa dollar a banana. He's happy if he recoups just part of them by selling the bananas at the family fruit stand, charging the going price for imports. Fernandes said he began with three or four plants four years ago. Then someone gave him a book on growing bananas and he was off and running. He now has eight or nine varieties in his 900 square metre greenhouse, including mini, dwarf and semi-dwarf plants — a mere sampling of the more than 30 varieties grown com- mercially in warmer climates.
