M4 CASTLEGAR NEWS, Friday, September 10, 1976 . ‘Spiritual Leader Stephen Sorokin ‘Makes Visit to Grand Forks By Betty Makortoff Grand Forks Gazette On Aug. 24, I was driving down'a road in Grand Forks * when I camo upon many cars parking and a large crowd gathering inthe Naedot ofahome. ? = Upon enquiring I was told that: 3 3: Stephan Sorokin, the spiritual $ leader of the Sons of Freedom = Religious sect was due to arrive % momentarily. I stayed on with the crowd ind waited with them, This {seemed much more than a ‘eeoineidence’. in my life, for lately I've been thinking a great Many puzzling questions uuldn’t find answers to. wondered why there were such _ isconflicting beliefs between traces and sects, yet the desired vigoal was always the same. : I thought of Quebec, Ire- land, Israel, the Arab nations, and other countries where "people could no longer commun- ieate their needs to each other _ even though their language was. “the same. Yet despite their differences each individual has the same need... to have enough to eat, to live in a peaceful environment, to be loved, to have a safe journey through life, to see their children grow up safely, etc. This is the common bond between humanity .... And so I cleared my mind of opinions and beliefs and prepared for a privileged afternoon, Mr. and Mrs, Sorokin soon arrived with their friends and associates. I spoke with Mr, Sorokin for a few minutes and I expressed my views about various religions and their common bond, I asked if he would consent in making a few comments along the same line of thought. He agreed and we spent a most enjoyable two hours visiting. Mr. Sorokin's conversation began about the new settle- ment of the Sons of Freedom in Krestova. “Settlements are re- built all over the hillsides and throughout the valley where once burnt remains of homes stood, A new start in more ways than one, for the people have learned by their past mistakes and are striving for a more harmonious bond be- tween themselves.” On a very small seale they are experiencing the same conflicts as in Ireland and Israel. There was a period of burnings and -bombings throughout British. Columbia. Mr. Sorokin said that there are two kinds of peace. Political peace and spiritual peace. The Sons of. Freedom in earlier years claimed they were striv- ing for spiritual peace. They ‘were observing the discord in the world and they began to bring attention upon them- selves by bombings and the burning of their homes. They wanted to protest-to’ prevent the coming a a Srd world war. ‘The burnings were done by many, the bombings by only a few, and fortunately no one was injured or killed. After some time had passed, the thought did*come to the people, “What is the use of protesting when we are only reproducing a war ona small scale and defeating our own purpose.” Along with this came the realization that Stephen Sorokin ‘they had been striving for a Political peace, not a spiritual one. s Mr. Sorokin had never advocated anything but a peaceful existence for these people, and after being their spiritual leader for 25 years, feels that his efforts are being rewarded. The community of Krestova has been rebuilt with & prayer house, and young families have formed a choir and discussion groups. Tasked Mr. Sorokin how he encourages his people to keep growing and he replied, “Their deeds... they must continue cultivating their deeds and live, by the true Doukhoborism, to follow Christ's teachings. All disharmony on earth stems from negative thinking which man creates. You must first correct yourself before you pray to God, I am trying to give them ideas... and when they apply the ideas, they in turn learn to correct themselves,” “God does not punish... » people punish themselves. They create their own negative thoughts, The earth is filled with negativity and it is time every. one realized that we must struggle towards peace. ‘That is the only hope to bring the earth back to harmony.” Mr. Sorokin spent the afternoon and evening speaking ~ te-the crowd, thapbe and his wife Ann mingled with individ- uals, The atmosphere was very informal and happy. The Sorokins spent the night in Grand Forks and returned to their home in Krestova the following day. They have two children, Sonya 16, and Nicolas 17 years old. “ "Mrs. Sorolin Group to Process LIP Grants Has Been Named The Constituency, Advis- ory Group for Kootenay West, which will decide which LIP | grant applications actually get funds, has Kootenay West MP Bob Brisco.
