CASTLEGAR NEWS, May 6, 1981 LADYSMITH (CP) — The house is a fortress with watchtowers and a drawbridge. Residents of this Vancouver Island com- munity thought it was a research centre for mush- ri nt Many of the walls, false and held in place by mag- nets instead of nails, offer dozens of hiding places. The two watchtowers were connected to the labor- atory by intercom. Tho ei 8. But the RCMP says it was a drug laboratory which turned out 95 per cent of all the MDA (synthetic mescaline, a hal- lucinogen) on the West’ Coast, It was designed and built by owner Arthur Williams, who was officially declared dead in 1977 after his plane crashed in the Georgia Strait between Nanaimo and Vancouver. However, theories per- sist he staged his death to avoid prosecution for drug trafficking. The house revealed its secrets last month after it was: sold to Ken Heal of Nanaimo, was the only access to the building from the ground once the doors were locked. And there is a compli- cated escape route from the main laboratory through walls to the base- ment, behind a moveable bookcase, through a cul- vert to a secret laboratory and to a tunnel which ended in a shed where Williams kept two motor- eycles. He had several labs hid- den around Ladysmith, RCMP say. One, on Mt. Benson, was a three-metre underground cubicle that was camouflaged so well it took RCMP a year to find it, Williams, suspecting the RCMP had !ocated it, had Fortress thought to be drug lab it-dynamited, However, the real mys- tery is Williams. In August, 1977, RCMP raided Williams’ house and charged him with etght eaped to the Grand Cay- man Islands in the Carib- bean, The theory was rein- forced on March 7, 1979, when his wife, Margaret, hed. Hi counts of traffic in MDA and noe session for the purpose of trafficking. A trial date was set and he was freed on bail, However, he never stood HIT POOR WEATHER? Three months latér, on the night of Nov. 30, Williams was flying alone when he radiced Vancou- ver airport control tower he was turning back be- cause of poor weather. Williams told the con- troller he was out of con- trol and the plane disap- peared from the radar screen. The plane's wreck- age was found but not Williams’ body. Followers of the case speculate he somehow es- ler be- longings and $57,300 in cash wore found. Williams grew up in Somerset, England, served in the army and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct ‘Medal. When he arrived in B.C. in 1950, he started his own business that grew out of one of his passions — ar- chery — but the company went under because of cost overruns, At about the time his business was failing in the late 1980s, Williams began letting hippies stay on his property and it was here, it is thought, he was first exposed to the drug cul- ture.
