‘i se * Castlegar News Aprit 23, 1986 oe _ Castle QUEEN ELIZABETH TURNS 60 LONDON (CP) — Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, Queen of Canada and 16 other realms, horse-breeder, grandmother and confidant of prime ministers, cele brated her 60th birthday this week — pensionable age for women in Britain — and ean apply for a senior citizen's bus pass She won't. With a personal fortune estimated at $200 million, a yacht the size of a cruise liner, a fleet of Bentleys and more than a dozen state carriages, the Queen doesn’t need to rub shoulders with the hoi poloi. Bur she insists on doing so at every opportunity = she invented the royal walkabout — and that may be the key to her popularity, her political sensitivity and her unquestioned success as the embodiment of the disparate and sometimes disputatious 49-country Commonwealth and its more than one-billion people. “One of the most endearing things about our Majesty is her ordinariness,” The Daily Mail said last week. The Queen still gets down on her knees to mix food for her 14 beloved corgis and still picks the places where the dogs are buried in the grounds of her country home of Sandringham. The royal household staff delights in telling of her obsession with turning off lights to save on electric bills. At 60 — in the 35th year of her reign — she has an unparalleled span of direct contact with leaders who have shaped history since the Second ‘World War. WEEKLY AUDIENCE Winston Churchill, at age 80, was the first of eight British prime ministers summoned every Tuesday for a weekly audience with the Queen, then a grieving 25-year-old suddenly elevated to the throne by the death of King George VI At birth, Elizabeth was an unlikely future queen. Until 1936 she was simply the daughter of the Prince of Wales's younger brother. But the death of her grandfather, George V, and the abdication of his eldest son Edward VIII a few months later, vaulted the 10-year-old child known at.Lillibet to first-in-line to a throne in a lineage that stretches back to the year 829. Elizabeth, who became Queen in 1954, was transformed the monarchy. As first head of the Commonwealth, she has become a roving ambassador for its ideals, which she holds dear, and has visited every member country. “She does not exude imperialism, she exudes concern and sympathy and involvement,” says Shridath Ramphal, secretary general of the Commonwealth. “She is a participant in the Commonwelath, not an overlord or overlady.” Alec Douglas-Home is still impressed 22 years after he was prime minister of Britain. “She knew everybody at the top level. In the Commonwealth, prime ministers wilt talk to her quite openty and freely about the affairs of their countries.” Harold Wilson, 4nother former PM, says he can think of no one who knows the Commonwealth better. “Then, there's her very long experience,” said Wilson. “She would say: ‘Oh I remember so many years ago when so-and-so was prime minister — he had one of these nasty problems’ though she would never give away any of the prime ministers’ secrets.” “You could be absolutely frank,” remembered James Callaghan. “We talked about anything at all — her family, my family it’s the one meeting at which there are no reports at all. It’s absolutely private.” “Let's go and see my mother,” the Queen told a startled Wilson once and the two drove off, without security and with the Queen at the wheel. The Queen doesn’t shy away from subtle but unmistakable forays into the political arena when she feels the institutions she represents are threatened. In her Christmas broadcast in 1972, the year Britain joined the European Community, she said the new ties“. . cannot alter our historical and personal attachments with kinsmen and friends overseas.” Strong stuff from a supposedly powerless monarch. Lady Longford, in a biography published in 1983, said the Queen's “blackest nightmare” is that she would be used as a reluctant pawn in a political game. Her own personal safety seems not to trouble her at all. Twice she has shown considerable courage with a calm almost bordering on detachment. In 1981, during the Trooping of the Color — a parade of her personal regiments — six shots rang out. The Queen firmly reined in her spooked horse and earried on. A 17-year-old was later arrested for firing blanks. FOILS PROWLER A year later, a prowler eluded Buckingham Palace's security, slipped into the Queen's bedroom and sat on the bed. She talked to him for 10 minutes, calmly offered him a cigarette and then used the excuse that she had to send for some to call a royal footman. The Queen rarely allows a public occasion to end without her trademark walkabout. She smiles, chats and deftly transfers endless bouquets of proferred posies to a lady-in-waiting At age 21, when she was engaged to Prince Philip, she told an adoring nation: “I am devoted to your service.” She has expanded that through the Common wealth. Even Pierre Trudeau, the former Canadian prime minister who was initially cool to both the monarchy and h, became a fan of both, say his former Four former British prime ministers inter by The Sunday Times for a special edition to mark the Queen's 60th birthday spoke of her enormous political acumen, her interest and her ability to be disarmingly friendly without ever diminishing her constitutional role as head of state. Britons tend to view her as “Our Queen” and London's royalty-mad tabloids took great offence last year when a Canadian newspaper suggested that she was getting dowdy A day to celebrate LONDON (CP) The Queen celebrated her 60th * = @): Py “FULL GOSPEL DIREC ANGLICAN CHURCH birthday Monday, surround ed by her family, watched by millions of her subjects, and guarded by security agents wary of terrorist attacks.
