July 4,.1991 July 6, 1991 Open attracts record field By CasNews Staff Promising junior Denise Pottle of Castlegar and defending champion Loretta Bulfone of Trail will be among the players in what's being called the strongest field ever for the Castlegar Savings and Credit Union Ladies Open this weekend. A record 128 golfers from this is definitely the best showing we've had,” da McAfee, who co-orga: tournament’ with Johanson. “We even raised the price this year, so I don’t know. It’s (the tournament) probably built up a good reputation over the years, so that’s what we've got now. We're really excited about it.” T! the Leslie across the Ke q and the Okanagan will tee off at the Castlegar and District Golf Course for Saturday’s opening round of the two-day event. It wasn’t always this way, according to tournament co- organizer Diane McAfee. “A few years ago we almost had to cancel it because we didn’t even have 80 (golfers), so tour will include nine flights for golfers with Pay teehee ip it for golfers with a 0-15 l. In that flight will be McAfee and Bulfone, Pottle and Jo- hanson, as well as past winners Diony McArthur and Ruth Trickey of Castlegar and way playoff, will be battling the course and the odds in attempt- ing to become the first-ever repeat winner of the Open. I’d like to sell the game back to the people of Castlegar.” As far as players go, Chevaldave has a pretty good idea of the type of per- sonnel he wants. “On defence, if I had my choice, I'd like four bruisers who could play the game. Up front it’s a speed game and if you can combine size and speed then you have a per- fect blend. TO eee “But the biggest thing I'm looking for in a hockey play- er is hard work. You can make up for a lack of skills if you work hard. If you’re not willing to sacrifice anything for the team, you won’t be playing on this team,” he said. Tourism students out in real world After eight months of compre- hensive training, full-time stu- dents who have now completed the recreation and resort opera- tions and management program at Selkirk College’s Nelson cam- pus are now completing a month-long practicum at tourist hospitality operations across the west. The program is designed for the practical training of supervi- sory personnel within the resort sector of the tourism industry, the college says. Using seminars, workshops and field trips to enhance tradi- tional classroom instruction, program instructors introduce new ideas and developing trends “The curriculum is tailored for either the full-time or the part-time learner,” program instructor Lorna Marshall said in a news release. The arrangement allows stu- dents to pursue a provincially recognized credential without leaving their present jobs. It’s an arrangement that works well for the owner/operator who can’t take eight months off to com- plete this certificate program, Marshall says. Included in the program cur- riculum are the seven core courses which comprise the tourism supervisory develop- ment program, developed and endorsed by the Pacific Rim Insti of Tourism. Stud in the field of tourism h pain are practical in nature, and are often designed around a stu- dent's individual workplace situ- ation. leting the resort and recre- ation program receive a certifi- cate from PRIT acknowledging completion of the tourism super- visory core.
