CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, April 19, 1973 ‘Spokane Exhibition Winners ‘Include Many Local Philatelists A very successful stamp club banquet and exhibition was held at the Ridpath Motor Inn in Spokane. Several David Thompson Stamp Club mem- bers exhibited and received awards, The junior cup and gold award went to Sally Bird of © Kinnaird for her exhibit of U.S.A. 1972 stamps. A silver award went to Billy Zaitsoff of Castlegar for his “Conquest of Space”. Both are 12-year-olds, Margaret Munns won a silver for her printed pages of Expo ‘70 and a bronze award for her “One Man Show" of New Zealand, Axel Nielsen won a special award for his Canada business cards of 1880 to 1910, which also received a bronze award. Asa novice collector, Irene Brown captured a silver award Hike for History for her United Nation exhibit, Other exhibits were shown by Ivy Nielsen and Jim Toogood of the local club. John Moor also won a special award and a silver for his exhibits he entered at the New Westminster exhibition. One hundred sixty-nine frames of stamps including a Court of Honour were on display in Spokane with Axel Nielsen and Dave Williamson attending from Castlegar. Anyone wishing to attend the David Thompson Stamp Club banquet on May 5 at the Hi Arrow is asked to contact Axel Nielsen for reservations. Posters announcing the event have been distributed and sponsor- ship forms are being snapped up by hikers anxious to sign up large pledges. Many civic and youth groups have already pledged their support and the day promises to be well organized. Ten check points will be manned along the route. + The St. John’s Ambulance group look after the first-aid needs and help soothe blisters and sores. Water will be available for thirsty hikers at most of the check points and at the end of the line, at the site of the National Exhibition Centre for which the funds of the hike will be used, hotdogs and pop will await the hikers. Police said the Muller vehicle made a left-hand signal to turn into a driveway on 7th Avenue in Kinnaird and while waiting was struck in the rear, No injuries were reported ’with total damages estimated at $550. Two separate charges re- sulted in an accident reported at 9 p.m. in the vicinity of Monday Court Walter Michael Gleboff, 23, of Castlegar, was jailed for six months after pleading guilty ‘in court here Monday ‘to five counts of false pretences. RCMP said Gleboff ob- tained goods and money in August and September of 1972 by’ issuitig insufficient funds cheques tolallitig $106. Judge R. Blake Allan jailed Mr. Gleboff for six months on each count, the sentences to be served concurrently. William Khadikin, 44, of Castlegar, was fined $150 or in default two weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to a charge of impaired driving near Pentic- ton, March 19, His licence was unconditionally suspended for three months. Joseph Vroom of Kinnaird was fined $250 or in default one month's jail for driving with a blood alcohol level of .15 per cent. The charge arose from an incident on February 18 in Kinnaird. Highway Figure Stands Corrected An incorrect figure was used in a story in last week's Castlegar News dealing with the Kinnaird-Salmo Highway. The story, reprinted from another newspaper, said a $300,000 contract had already been awarded on the highway. In actual fact, a contract for $1,693,412 was awarded last July to Dawson Construction Co, for 3.82 miles. Earlier last year $300,000 had been allocated by the ‘highways department for the Deer Park road. Columbia Avenue and Gréen Street. William B, Marozoff of Castlegar was charged with driving without headlights be- ing illuminated; while Robert Nickerson of Robson was charged with following too close, Total damages were esti- mated at $700. A 15-year-old Kinnaird girl, Brenda Klit, was taken to hospital and released after the bicycle she was riding was in collision with a car driven by Joseph Dufour of Kinnaird. The incident occurred on First Street at the Castleaird Plaza. No charges are contem- plated. Motorcyclist Hospitalized A_ youthful motorcyclist was taken to the Castlegar and District Hospital Monday morn- ing following an accident on Third Avenue in Castlegar. The 350 Honda, reported to be driven by Alfred. Cecil, : MacAlpine-of Castlegar, was in * collision with a car.driven by Mike -Zaytsoff, also of Castle- gar. The Zaytsoff vehicle was attempting to turn left into his driveway when the incident occurred. Mr. MacAlpine is reported to have suffered extensive injuries to his arm and face. Damage to the motorcycle is estimated at $500 with $300 to the Zaytsoff vehicle. The accident is still under investigation. DISTRICT SOCHALS Mrs. J.
