wearing gloves. Other than a blood splattered rug and one
overturned chair, the library showed little evidence of'a
struggle having taken place there. Cohen's arms were
badly scratched. He claimed that his-wife had inflicted
the scratches by mistake during the hectic struggle.

The open door leading from the library to the terrace
and gardens beyond was the only way the attacker could
have gained entrance to the Cohen home. Police felt the
grounds should-have shown some evidence of an intruder
since the area around the terrace was soft mud. Yet no

The fact was police didn’t believe there had been an
intruder. Ronald Cohen was arrested and charged with
the murder of his wife. “-- ‘
While out on bail Cohen had an unnerving experience,
or at least he claimed he did. After visiting his tailor in
downtown Cape Town, he said he spotted his wife’s killer
on the street. The killer saw Cohen at precisely the same
moment and took off. Cohen gave chase, but lost the man
in the crowd. Having lost track of his quarry he asked an
elderly lady if she had seen a blond man dash past. The
lady answered in the affirmative and directed Cohen up
Adderley St. Later, despite advertising for the lady to
come forward,.Cohen was unable to locate her, and thus
lost his one opportunity to prove his story was true. -
. Cohen later commissioned an artist to paint a picture of
the killer from his description. He had the painting widely
distributed and offered a substantial reward, but the man
in the painting was never located. .
On Aug. 24, 1970 Ronald Cohen's murder trial opened in
Cape Town. It was one of the most publicized trials ever
to take place in South Africa. In esseuce, the entire case
boiled down to one question. Was Cohen’s story of an
intruder to be believed, or did he kill his wife and invent
the story to avoid punishment? .
. The Bresiding judge stated that, taking all the circum-

stantial evidence in its totality, he could come to no other
conclusion but to find Cohen guilty. He added that in his
judgment the crime was not premeditated. e
