It was the fifth and last game of a 12-day road trip for the Kings, who return home tonight to face the same Canucks who had scored just 62 goals in 21 previous games until their unexpected success against the Kings. “That was our worst game — I'm really embarrassed,” said King rookie Luc Robitaille, whose two-goal, four-point performance was overshadowed by the inept play cf Los Angeles goaltenders Roland Melanson and Darren Eliot. “I never thought we could lose like that. “It seemed like every time they shot, they scored. We've got to come back right away and show them we have guts. The last-place Canucks, 6-14-2, closed the margin tg four points on the Kings, 813-2, by getting two-goal performances from four players — Tony Tanti, rookie Jim Sandlak, Patrick Sundstrom and Petri Skriko. WANT SWEEP “We're in a position where we have to win both games inst the Kings,” said Tanti. “Two losses would have put us 10 points out of a playoff spot and that's a lot to make up, even this early in the season.” The Canucks scored four times on the power play — the Kings managed three goals with the man advancage — and outscored Los Angeles 5-3 in the second period and 4-) in the third when they outshot the Kings 13-1. Barry Pederson, Rich Sutter and Stan Smy! also scored for the Canucks equalling the ‘team record for goals in a game set in March 1971 against the California Golden Seals. “Our key players came through with the big goals for a change,” said Smyl. “It's a confidence, builder, for sure, but we can't become over-conffdent going into their building.” Los Angeles veteran Marcel Dionne matched the two goals and two assists of linemate, with Steve Duchesne scoring the other King goal. Melanson was yanked by Quinn in the second period with the Canucks leading 4-2, but Eliot stopped just 11 of 18 shots in surrendering seven goals and Melanson went back into the game midway through the third. DIFFERENT RESULT “This is silly business in a lot of ways,” said Canuck coach Tom Watt. “It seems a lot of goaltenders have come up with big games against us this season and it was nice to see some shots go in for a change.” Referee Denis More! had his hands full after the first period when linesman Wayne Forsey left the game with a leg injury. More! and rookie linesman Brad Lazarowich had to deal with several dangerous incidents. Morel assessed Dave Williams of the Kings a spearing major and game misconduct when he jabbed his stick into the stomach of Cantick captain Smyl in the second period. Morel also ejected Vancouver's Dave Lowry for going after Williams while Smy! was injured. Montreal's Mike McPhee scored at 1:14, then Quebec got goals from Alain Cote at 13:13 and Anton Stastny at 14:14. Quebec's Dale Hunter suffered a broken bone in his left leg above the ankle and will be sidelined for at least eight weeks. Hunter had missed only three games since entering the league in 1980. ISLANDERS 5 PENGUINS 1 Pat LaFontaine, Brent Sutter, Mikko Makala, Bryan Trottier and Rich Kromm scored the goals and goaltender Kelly Hrudey made 30 saves as New York beat Pittsburgh for the 10th straight time at Nassau Country Coliseum since November 1983. The Islanders scored on three of five power-play opportunities and held Pittsburgh to one power-play goal, by Kevin LaVallee. in seven attempts. Swimmers win medals Aggressive Pump & Pipe Supply Inc. Castlegar plays Kimberley on Friday, Spokane and Portland, Ore. Saturday and Beaver Valley on Sunday By CORALEA SCHUEPFER The Stanley Humphries secondary school swimmers returned from the 36th B.C. Secondary School Swimming Championships at UBC on the weekend with a greater victory than ever before. The 13 swimmers captured 15 med- als this year and every team member qualified in at least one of their events as the top eight finalists in the province. Overall the team placed third in the province with 94 points, only to be outdone by two larger Lower Mainland teams, Centennial A with 215 points and Lord Byng with 111 points of which both teams had strong syn- chronized swimmers and high diving team scores added into their final scores outnumbering the SHSS team three to one. There were a total of 107 school teams participating at this year’s meet. In individual events, gold medals went to Wendy Pilla who broke her last year's record in 50 freestyle creating a new record of 28:08 seconds. A new personal record for her at this meet, she placed first in the 50 butterfly with a time of 30:76 seconds just missing the record by one tenth of a second. Jeff Schuepfer claimed the silver medal in his 100 freestyle with a time of 57:43 seconds and a fourth place finish in 50 backstroke. Trevor Seville placed eighth in 50 breast stroke, Steve Junker placed 11th in 50 freestyle, Leanne Bentley placed 11th in 50 backstroke and Jason Schuepfer placed 16th in 50 butterfly Most impressive this year was the fact that all but one relay team qualified in the top eight finalists and that relay placed as alternate which speaks highly of the SHSS individual discipline and strong team spirit The combined efforts of Jeff and Jason Schuepfer, Trevor Seville and and Jennifer Small placed sixth in the same race — another first for the girls team with the highest ranking yet. The all first-year team of Kris Kinakin, Jennifer Small, Leanne Bent- ley and Tracey Picco placed eighth in the girls 200 medley relay. The com- bination of Brian Vecchio, Jason Schuepfer, Trevor Seville and Rob McGregor also placed eighth in their 200 mediey relay. Another combined team of first year swimmers Tracy Piceo, Laurene Brown, Kris Kinakin and Jennifer Small also proved that there is future strength in the SHSS team by placing eighth in the girls 200 free relay. The corresponding boys team of Brian Vecchio, Jason Schuep- fer, Steve Junker and Rob McGregor placed ninth in the same race Highlighting the weekend's tour nament were the mixed relays. Again the SHSS team proved their strength when the combined efforts of Steve Junker, Helaine Oleski, Rob McGregor and Wendy Pilla gave a close chase to the first two teams to capture the bronze medal in the 200 mixed free style relay. To top this accomplishment both Wendy Pilla and Helaine Oleski fin ished swimming and without any rest were up on the blocks for the last event. The SHSS team of Jeff Schuep- fer, Trevor Seville, Wendy Pilla and Helaine Oleski swam all the way in a first place position to walk away with the gold medal in the 200 mixed medley relay, not to mention claiming title to the trophy for the third year in a row, an accomplishment which no other team has matched. Canseco named AL rookie of the year OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jose Can seco, baseball's American League rookie of the year, insists he can play better in the future Wally Joyner, who finished second in voting for the award, insists he played better than Canseco in 1986 “No one will ever be able to tell me he had a better season than I did,” Joyner said Tuesday after voting for the award was announced. Canseco, the Oakland A’s slugger tied for fourth in the league with 33 homers and was second in runs batted in with 117. But he hit just .240, was second in the AL with 175 strikeouts and was an average outfielder Joyner batted .290 with 22 homers and 100 RBI to help the California Angels win the Al, West champion ship. He also was a fine fielder at first base Canseco received 16 of 28 first place votes and 110 points to Joyner'’s 12 first-place votes and 98 points. Relief pitcher Mark Eichhorn of the Toronto Blue Jays was third with no first-place votes but 23 points on four seconds and 11 thirds. Eichhorn es tablished a Toronto rookie record with 14 victories. The right-hander was 146 with 10 saves and a 1.72 earned run average Joyner had hit 16 home runs by the end of May, but tailed off after the all! star break. He eventually was di agnosed as having a staph infection, which prevented him from playing in the final four games of the AL playoffs “It's almost like the first half I had was forgotten because of the finish Jose Canseco had,” said Joyner. ‘It's hard to swallow my slow second half especially now that we know what the reason was. “If I hadn't been sick, it might have been easier. But it happened and I have to live with it.” The controversy came one week after a flap arose following Roger Cle mens's selection as the AL most valuable player.
