One note I regularly harp on is the media-evangelism does at least as much harm as it does good, because it gives the unchurched, who don't know any better, the wrong idea of the message and style of the local church in their community, Most local chur- these media, warm and understanding; most ministers are there to be of service, not to sell themselves. And, of course, being in a real church with real is a lot more helpful than sitting at home, just watching. Some people go so far as to reject Christian faith because of the media evangelists. They think that since they can't believe all that tele- vision stuff, they must not be able to believe Christianity at all. That’s the sort of thing I have long said about media evangelism — not about all of them, mind you, but about many of them. Therefore I should be gloating a bit over the PTL scandal, shouldn't I? But I'm not. In fact, I find myself strangely in sym- pathy with those caught in the middle of this unholy mess. I think these media evan- gelists were very sincere when they started. All of them probably began with great concern for lost souls, and much courage in ventur- ing into the financial risks of big business. I doubt i have their kind of courage. But ~something went wrong. As I see it, in spite of clear Christian teaching, they were already brainwashed by the American ideals of show. bix and success, and so slowly, without them re- alizing it, they started to compromise their message in We're OPEN MONDAY dl.° Provincial TICKETS Castlegar News office T 365-7266 by 5 p.m. Wednesday to claim. Somewhere’ along the way they slipped over that fine line between. being normal hypocrites and capital-H~ Hypocrites. But thén, which one of us has never slipped into some com- promising habit, slowly, step by small step, until we were into adel well over heads? our Before I, or anyone else, start heaving stones at the PTL or any of the others, we should notice again the glass houses weal live in. Maybe we should even consider ourselves fortunate that we lack the talent to be- come popular and successful, because popularity and suc- cess seem to be a real danger to even the most sincere among us, be they evangel- ists, politicians, or any other public figure. But, you ask, does not the scandal show the Christian message itself to be untrue? No. The Christian message is about Jésus Christ, and not about the extent to which His followers sometimes live up to, or sometimes fail to live up to, the way of life He has declared. In fact, the reason we can detect anything wrong in these media evan- gelists at all is because we know of a higher standard of { right and wrong. It's that higher standard, and its Source, that the Christian message is all about. Castlegar News 197 Columbia Ave. 365-7266 THRIFT SHOP BUSINESS IMPROVES By MIKE KALESNIKO Staff Writer The Castlegar thrift shop may not seem like the place to browse, but, according to volunteer Frances Hunter, it’s seeing more business now than when it first opened. s The shop, located downstairs in the Oglow building on Columbia Avenue, has seen several different locations in Castlegar since it opened in 1972, but traffic remains brisk. “The sales are a lot higher now than when we first opened,” Hunter told the Castlegar News Thursday. “Or even 10 years ago for that matter.” Hunter explained that customers arrive as soon a the shop opens at 10 a.m. She said the shop deposits between $50 and $180 a day. “When you consider that we rarely sell an item for above $5, that’s a lot of sales,” she said. But Hunter is skeptical that the thrift shop, reflects the economy of the community. She said the shop's clientele consists of people from all walks of life. She said middle income people shop there, retirees, mothers with children and those on welfare. She said the shop has “regulars” who come in just about every day and many who have never been in before. “People shop here because it's a good place to buy cheap clothing,” said Hunter. “Yesterday, one young women told us she buys all her clothes here. “I pick up the occasional blouse here myself,” said Hunter. Hunter said in 1984 the, shop pulled in between $16,000 and $17,000 and she said the 1986 fiscal year improved by $300 over the 1985. But Hunter said after rent and miscellaneous items are covered, there is not a lot of money left for charities. In the past the thrift shop has given to such causes as the school bands and church funds, and she said they regularly donate to the Legion’s Christmas Hamper fund. Hunter, 69, has been with the thrift shop from the beginning. She said the late Tanis Killough, a Castlegar resident, was the force behind the shop's creation. An eight-woman committee, made up of four women from the Anglican Chureh and four women from the United Church, now run the shop. The shop ran from 1972-1976 on 4th Street, across from the Castlegar liquor store, then moved to the old school board office where the Castlegar courthouse is now located. But when that location was scheduled to be torn down in 1981 to make way for the courthouse, the thrift shop was offered space in the basement of the Oglow building. Today, the shop is run by a volunteer crew of 45 women and exists entirely on donations, mostly clothing, but occasionally sells such things as furniture and sporting goods. “We've been given things that we didn’t know what they were,” said Hunter. But Hunter said she and the other volunteers have become quite efficient at running the shop. She said at first, they tried to sort the clothing according to size but that proved toostime consuming. Now, she said items are sorted by category and priced according to a pricing formula that Hunter admits is hardly scientific. “We had one lady last week, she was given a price and she said to the lady behind the counter, ‘Well it sure doesn’t pay to come here when you're working,’ ” she said. But Hunter maintains that one of the shop's biggest problems is moving the clothes that don't sell. “People bring in clothes from garage sales,” she said. “If they don't sell at garage sales they won't sell here. “Instead of taking it to the dump they bring it here,” she said. _ Hunter said the shop also has a problem selling children’s clothing. She said clothes for those under eight sell well but clothes for children between 10 and 12 are difficult to sell. “I guess that's the age they become more elothes conscious,” she suid: One of the shop's busiest times is October. According to Hunter, people come into the shop looking for costumes for Halloween. But Hunter said those in the shop feel most satisfied when they can help a needy family. She said, several years ago, a family was able‘to clothe themselves after they lost everything in a house fire. More recently, she said a family of “boat people” were able to find all the clothes they needed there. Hunter said the shop would not survive without donations from the community. She said the occasional estate sale or a family moving out of town sometimes brings a windfall of good clothes to the shop. “We really appreciate all the help,” she said. “We certaintly couldn't keep operating without them.” _ handle 14.1 Ibs.!
