Giants eye Chiefs By The Press With a National Football League playoff berth loom ing, New York Giants are keeping a wary eye on Kan sas City Chiefs, their foes today. “Tm just worried about Kansas City, not anything else,” said Giants coach Bill Parcells. “They have guys who can hurt you. “(Carlos) Carson, (Henry) Marshall and J.T. Smith all are capable of making the long play.” Kansas City, 5-7 and last in the American Football Con ference West, made only one long play against the Giants in a 38-17 victory last year, but Parcells remembers how his team's mistakes contri buted to the loss. “They (Kansas City) inter cepted a pass for a touch down and they got another a victory over Minnesota, and San Francisco 49ers, 11-1, can wrap up the NFC West with a victory over New Orleans. In the rest of the league, it’s Indiannapolis at Los An- geles Raiders, Los Angeles Rams at Tampa Bay, Phil- adelphia at St. Louis, Atlanta at Cincinnati and Houston at Cleveland. On Monday night, New York Jets are at Miami, which clinched the AFC East with New England's loss. Kansas City has been troubled by injuries this sea- son. TRAVEL NOTES TAKEN ON THE ISLE OF EIRE From the Charters’ occasional journals. Dublin: Friday, Aug. 6 — This being our 18th wedding anniversary, we splurged and went to the dinner and cabarat at Jury's Hotel, which, like most things in Eire, we found to be expensive. ‘That morning we had gone to Malahide Castle, a family home for almost 800 years and while attractive, it was incredibly creaky, and by comparison to most of the other great homes and castles that we had visited in England, Scotland and Wales, strangely bare. In the afternoon we went for a tour around the beautiful Dublin coastline and then by cab to St. Patrick's Sathedral for evensong. The music was hauntingly beautiful but, sadly, the congregation was scant The evening at Jury's was a dress-up affair so all 50 of our tour group turned out in their best bib-and-tucker, while our wonderful tour guide Maggie looked sharp and attractive. The dining room of Jury's must hold 600 patrons on its two levels, and it was packed. Fortunately, we had a good table — both for comfort and for a clear view of the stage at the one end. The meal, too, was good, and served with dispatch — essential ingredients to the enjoyment of such a special oceasion. The star performer for the evening, Irish comedian Hal Roach, Ireland's “King of Blarney”, was backed up by a very competent group of singers, dancers and harpists. Up to this point my impression of Irish dancers which had come from other concerts and TV programs had been anything but favorable, for they seemed to me to be frozen solid above the waist, activated by marionette strings below and poker-faced to boot! The dancers in this case, however, were beautifully costumed, young, attractive and brimming with life — as fine a group of youngsters as any I have seen — particularly a very young, golden haired little girl and a kilted young boy who almost stole the show from under the nose of the star Nearly all Irish entertainment, I am happy to report, must include the Celtic harp — a four-foot tall, graceful instrument with the most hauntingly melodious tones of any instrument I know and whether played solo or concert or as an accompaniment, it can thrill or make the tears start; and when the harpists are young, beautifully gowned women, often with the long, equally beautiful titian (red-gold) hair that one so often sees in both Ireland and Scotland, little more can be asked. Hal Roach’s act is 80 per cent Irish and 20 per cent American stand-up comedy. This means that the far greater part is a self-mocking melange of half-truths and fantasy in which near-truth is told as a merry joke and fantasy given out as solemn gospel-truth. The great problem is determining which is gospel and which blarney On the day following the cabaret we had intended leaving Dublin for England, enroute to the ancient nd so enthusiastically had booked every plane, “But,” as Maggie had frequently observed, “this is Ireland, and you will get used to it.” However, we did manage to book a ferry for the following day from the Dublin port of Dun (pronounced Dun Leary). We had booked a hotel which we were assured by the travel agent was just a stone's throw from the port. “You'll be able to see the ferry coming in,” she smiled. I should be able to see so far! It was at least three miles away and to see it I would have needed x-ray eyes for the intervening hills, buildings and towers. Of course, I should have known better. Maggie had forewarned us of this possibility, as a joke, and I had experienced a little of it earlier. The Irish, Maggie told us in her beautiful brogue, are a tender-hearted people, so rather than give you what they feel may be a bit of bad news, for example, that your desired destination by foot is five miles away, they will Maggie told us the Irish area tender-hearted people, so rather than give bad news, they break it to you gently. break it to you gently. Thus, your first informant will say, “You'll be after wantin’ to go to Ballingarry, will you? Oh, it's not far. Just about a mile down that road. You'll have no difficulty at all.” When you have walked your mile with nothing in sight, and ask for direction you will be given the same reassuring instruction, and again, and again and again until you reach Ballingarry, having been buoyed with hope and reassurance, mile after mile, while your guides can go their way with a free conscience. A good map is a lot more impersonal, but a heck of a lot more certain. The 32 hour “ocean trip” across the Irish Sea — fast and efficient as it was — got a very Jow rating on the tourist interest scale, since it was dbout as interesting as a bus trip across the Canadian prairies at night — and as confining — since the human tide toward England though slowing, was still strong The one advantage that the ferry did have was an extensive and enthusiastically patronized duty-free liquor shop, followed by a whistle-through customs shed and portside train station. Ship-to-train, therefore, re- quired only about 10 minutes of modest struggle. The trouble was, that with all the holiday traffic and other problems, the train was an 1'/: hours leaving for Chester so that we arrived about mid-afternoon, a fact, which severely cramped our visiting time in the city However, once arrived, we were assisted in finding a bread-and-breakfast close to the station, but had a good lunch at The Witches Kettle recommended by the landlady — and went at once to pay our respects to the almost 1,000-year-old former Benedictine Chester Cathe dral. The city fathers, my journal notes, have done a wonderful job on the city and have not only preserved many of the famous historic places, such as the cathedral, but have kept the city open, attractive and at the same time, as natural as any I had seen. Chester has character and appeal. The prices for meals and particularly for staples were also much lower than in Eire, particularly after that weekend, since the Castlegar's two Beta Sig ma Phi Sorority Chapters, Alpha Phi and Xi Gamma Rho, gathered at the Fireside Place banquet room Nov. 4 for their annual fall banquet. At this year’s affair, three different ritual ceremonies were performed honoring particular members of both chapters. The pledge ritual was given to five new members joining the Alpha Phi, Ritual of Jewels Chapter Honored were: Kathy Markin, Rose Meyer, Cindy Rowe, Heather Scott, and Diane Welychko. Also pledged was Adele Parnell, who was unable to attend the ceremony Each of the pledges was given a long stem yellow rose and their Ritual of Jewels pin. PLEDGE RITUAL . . .
